Why isn’t Grant Delpit playing for the Browns against the Texans in the Wild Card game?

As they prepare to take on the Texans in a Wild Card Round clash, the Browns will have to do so without the services of one of their key starters.

If there is a silver lining for the Browns, it’s that none of their stars are out. On the other hand, when we consider what is at stake on Saturday, one has to imagine that any absence will definitely be felt.

The Cleveland Browns injury situation

It would be fair to say that the Cleveland Browns have been plagued by injuries this season, not the least of which was the loss of their starting quarterback, Deshaun Watson. Yet, one has to admit that few teams arrive at this stage of the season without a number of injuries. To that end, the Browns will place their faith in veteran quarterback Joe Flacco who was signed as a replacement after their starting QB’s season came to a premature end. Now, Flacco will hope to lead the team to a win over the Houston Texans in the Wild Card round of the 2024 NFL Playoff on Saturday. At the very least, the list of those who have been ruled out is not long. Below you can see the final injury report for the team:

Out:

  • S Grant Delpit (groin)
  • K Dustin Hopkins (left hamstring)
  • WR Cedric Tillman (concussion)

Questionable:

  • CB Denzel Ward (knee)
  • CB Mike Ford Jr. (calf)
  • RB Pierre Strong Jr. (back)
  • S Juan Thornhill (calf)

How will the Browns cope without Grant Delpit?

That’s a good question. There was in fact hope that he would play after he returned to practice earlier this week, but he was later placed on injured reserve and has remained there since. To that end the team’s secondary will not receive the boost that it hoped for. If Delpit is to help his teammates, he will have to wait until the Divisional Round and that’s assuming the Browns can make it there without him. Of course, the 25-year-old is not the only injury concern that the Browns will have to deal with on Saturday. There is also Dustin Hopkins who has been out for two weeks now, and Ward who is typically the team’s starting cornerback. Ultimately, things could be worse for the Browns, but this isn’t ideal either.
