Why isn’t Justin Fields playing for the Jets against the Buccaneers? New York QB’s injury status
The New York Jets have endured a tough start to the new season, and head coach Aaron Glenn must now deal with QB Fields’ absence.
The New York Jets’ nightmare start under new head coach Aaron Glenn hit another snag in Week 2. The former Detroit Lions defensive coordinator began his tenure 0-2 after losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Buffalo Bills, and now he’ll be without quarterback Justin Fields for Week 3 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Fields left the Bills game in the third quarter after a hit from Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa, which caused him to crash hard to the turf. He immediately entered the concussion protocol and did not return. Tyrod Taylor replaced him.
Glenn confirms Fields’ Week 3 absence
“Speaking of injuries, Justin is out. He’s still in the concussion protocol,” Glenn confirmed during a press conference on Wednesday.
Fields finished the game completing just three of 11 passes for 27 yards. He was sacked twice, including one that caused a fumble and left him shaken on the field.
Tyrod Taylor takes the reins from Fields
With Fields sidelined, veteran Tyrod Taylor will start for the Jets against the Buccaneers. Taylor threw seven completions for 56 yards and a touchdown pass in the loss to Buffalo.
“He brings something we also have in Justin, which I really like, and that’s experience. He’s been in this league a long time. There’s no coverage or pressure he hasn’t seen, and that’s why I trust him,” Glenn said. “He’s very studious, a good athlete, and there’s no better option right now as our backup quarterback.”
Taylor, who debuted in the NFL in 2011, has thrown for 12,310 career yards, 69 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. He’s been sacked 179 times over his career, bringing a steady veteran presence to the Jets’ offense.
