There are stories and relationships that go far beyond the field. Just a few months ago, both the Kansas City Chiefs and much of the NFL world were bracing for the possibility that they’d never see Travis Kelce take another snap. The veteran tight end had openly floated the idea of retirement after the recently concluded season, and everything pointed to a decision that felt final. There didn’t seem to be anything powerful enough to make him reconsider - until an old mentor stepped in. And that mentor didn’t just convince the legendary No. 87 to return; he persuaded him to sign a three‑year extension.

From 2018 through 2023, we saw the very best of the Kansas City Chiefs. Led by Patrick Mahomes, the team captured two Super Bowl titles and launched a dynasty which, as things stand, may yet have more mileage in it. And while Andy Reid, Mahomes, and Kelce rightfully dominated the headlines, there was another figure whose impact carried just as much weight: Eric Bieniemy.

Eric Bieniemy, the man who brought Kelce back

Bieniemy - who served as the Chiefs’ running backs coach from 2013 to 2017 before taking over the offense in 2018 - was the driving force behind Kelce’s return for three more seasons. After brief stops with the Commanders and the Bears, Bieniemy came back to Kansas City to once again run the offense, and naturally, he wanted his top weapons with him.

The bond between Bieniemy and Kelce runs much deeper than X’s and O’s. For the star tight end, Bieniemy has long been a foundational mentor, a figure whose influence feels more familial than professional. So when he appeared in the photos of Kelce’s new contract signing, it only reinforced what many already suspected: he was a decisive factor in Kelce’s choice to keep playing.

All of this underscores how a close, trusting relationship helped the Chiefs retain one of the most important playmakers in their offense. Eric Bieniemy didn’t just return to steer the unit schematically - he came back to serve as a steady hand for the players who matter most.
