It’s never good to see a player and a coach fighting and certainly not, when the game ends in a loss for the team. Not a good look for the Chiefs.

Given that he couldn’t lead his team to victory, the heated argument that he got into with his offensive coordinator, will only raise more questions for the star quarterback.

Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes and OC Eric Bieniemy have heated argument

It wouldn’t have taken more than a glance, at Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on Sunday, to know that things were not ok. Leading 14-10 at the half, Mahomes and Bieniemy could be seen having a heated exchange as they made their way - with the rest of the team - to the locker room. Indeed, cameras caught the moment as the team started to head off the field. Mahomes could be seen at one point removing his helmet and then proceeding to argue with Bieniemy. So intense was the argument, that Chiefs coach Andy Reid had to intervene in order to bring an end to the confrontation. To make matters worse, the Chiefs would ultimately go on to lose 20-17.

What was Patrick Mahomes angry about?

It is understood, that Mahomes was frustrated with the team’s play-calling towards the end of the first half. Having forced the Colts to punt in the final minute of the second quarter, the Chiefs recovered possession on their own 46-yard line with 34 seconds on the clock. Following a holding penalty call, they then found themselves on their own 36 and five seconds less to work with. What we can assume here, is that Mahomes wanted to try to get his team within field goal range. What we saw on the other hand, was Bieniemy call for a play which involved Jerick McKinnon running on the third down. The end result? The clock ran out on the Chiefs. Mahomes was livid and immediately sought out Bieniemy and we know what happened next.

Spats aside, credit must be given to the Colts who managed to control Mahomes for most of the first half. Consider for a moment that he only threw for 84 yards across the first two quarters. In total, Mahomes threw 20 of 35 for 262 yards, 1 touchdown and 1 interception according to Statmuse. That’s not a bad night, but it’s not great either and the Chiefs did lose. Is it possible that his fight and frustration with his OC affected his play? Maybe. Can he and the Chiefs afford such a situation again? Absolutely not.
