Will 49ers star Christian McCaffrey play against the Seahawks in Week 1?

The San Francisco 49ers are facing a potential setback heading into their divisional matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, as star running back Christian McCaffrey did not participate in Friday’s practice.

What injury does McCaffrey have?

McCaffrey was a full participant on Wednesday and limited on Thursday, but a lingering calf injury kept him sidelined to close out the week - casting doubt on his availability for Sunday. The 29-year-old is listed as “questionable” on the 49ers’ official injury report for the Seahawks game.

Calf issues have plagued McCaffrey in the past. Last season, he missed 13 games due to a similar injury, appearing in just four contests. In limited action, he totaled 348 yards from scrimmage on 65 touches.

Who could step up if McCaffrey misses out?

If McCaffrey is ruled out, newly acquired Brian Robinson Jr. is expected to shoulder the load in the Niners’ backfield. Robinson arrived in San Francisco earlier this week via trade from the Washington Commanders and would immediately be thrust into a featured role.

The third-year back has appeared in 41 games, starting 37 of them. A product of Alabama, Robinson has racked up 2,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns on 570 carries. He’s also proven reliable in the passing game, hauling in 65 of 80 targets for 587 yards and five scores.

Behind Robinson, the 49ers have a pair of intriguing options in Isaac Guerendo and rookie Jordan James. Guerendo, now in his second year, impressed in 2024 when he filled in for McCaffrey, rushing for 420 yards and scoring four touchdowns. James, a fifth-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Oregon, is still finding his footing at the pro level but could see snaps if depth becomes an issue.
