Will Anthony Richardson play for the Colts against the Jaguars? NFL Week 5 injury status
Head coach Shane Steichen has eight players out with injuries of varying severity - including his starting quarterback Anthony Richardson.
After a humbling start to the new campaign, Indianapolis have managed to get back on track, winning their last two outings against the Bears and the Steelers although head coach Shane Steichen is first to admit that all of the four games the team has played so far have been close with tight results.
“A lot of these games come down to one-score games. Week in, week out, around the league you see a lot of one-score, close games - you’ve got to find a way to win those games and we’ve done that for the last two weeks and if it comes down to it this week, we gotta do it again,” Steichen told the media ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Jaguars.
Steichen wary of wounded Jaguars
Jacksonville are 0-4 after suffering straight defeats to the Dolphins, the Browns, the Bills and the Texans although Steichen is taking nothing for granted. “In this league, you can throw records out of the window - you really can. I’ve been a part of teams that played a 0-10 team once and lost, back in the day. It doesn’t matter, you’ve gotta show up and play - it doesn’t matter who your opponent is, it doesn’t matter what their record is, have have to show up and be ready to go”.
Steichen’s Colts will need to step up even if some of their starters are unavailable. Eight players featured on the injury report on Friday - among them, QB1 Anthony Richardson.
What injury does Anthony Richardson have when will he be back?
Richardson quit last weekend’s game against the Steelers after suffering a hip injury during the first quarter. He left the pitch for treatment but aggravated the injury as soon as he returned. He is listed as questionable and while he had limited participant in both Wednesday’s and Thursday’s practice sessions, it remains to be seen whether Steichen will risk him - the way it’s looking that’s unlikely. “He was limited during the week so we’ll see,” was all the coach would say on Friday.
Richardson is reported to have suffered bruising to the upper part of his hip and has an oblique strain. His place could go to veteran backup quarterback Joe Flacco, who came on as a substitute last week, throwing for 168 yards and ending with two touchdowns.
Indianapolis’ injury worries
The Colts have other players nursing injuries - Jonathan Taylor suffered a sprain to his right ankle and is ruled out for Sunday’s game but projected to return for the Week 8 trip to Houston. Kenny Moore II (hip) and Kwity Paye (cuadriceps) are also out. Ryan Kelly (neck) and Braden Smith (knee) are both questionable.
No new updates have been given on the status of three players: Zaire Franklin, Grant Stuard and Grover Stewart. Steichen told reporters, “We’re ruling out Kwity, JT and there’s one other one, and Kenny. We’ll see on the other guys”.
The Week 5 2024 NFL regular season game between the Indianapolis Colts and the Jacksonville Jaguars is scheduled to take place on Sunday 6 October at EverBank Stadium, Jacksonville, Florida, kicking off at 1 p.m. EST.
The game will be broadcast live on on CBS (WJAX) and NFL+ with the post-game highlights available on Youtube.
