Will Geno Smith play for the Seahawks against the Vikings? NFL injury update
The quarterback twisted his knee in last week’s 30-13 home defeat to the Packers. Coach Mike Macdonald gave an update on his status.
Last Sunday home game against the Packers went from bad to worse for the Seahawks. Veteran quarterback Geno Smith injured his knee and was forced to leave the game - which ended in defeat, the team suffering their first loss in over a month which puts their playoff chances in the balance.
Smith was replaced by Sam Howell after twisting his knee. He received medical attention onfield and in the locker room and although it was quickly established that he hadn’t suffered any internal damage, there was obvious concern about his availability with three key games coming up.
Key games for the Seahawks
The Seahawks bring the regular season to a close with games against the Vikings, Bears and most significantly, against the Rams. Seattle and the Rams are currently tied on 8-6 at the top of the NFC West and that clash at SoFi Stadium on the last day could determine who wins the division.
The good news came Wednesday when Geno Smith was able to fully participate in the team’s practice without any issues. The veteran quarterback also trained as normal on Thursday.
Coach Mike Macdonald gave an update on his status ahead of Thursday’s practice. “Geno feels good. Did walk-through today, we’ll see how many reps - we’ve gotta plan for practice, we’ll see how it alters his practice but he’ll be out there for a significant capacity today. We’ll see how many reps he takes”.
Macdonald added that the plan is same with running back Ken Walker who didn’t participate on Wednesday but returned to full practice on Thursday and appears to be over his calf problem. “We’re optimistic. We’ll probably ramp it up a little more tomorrow. And Olu [Oluwatimi], might not see him today in full capacity but should be out there tomorrow to rock ‘n’ roll".
Smith has thrown for 3,623 yards and 14 touchdowns with 13 interceptions in the 14 games he has played so far this season.
The 2024 NFL regular season game between the Minnesota Vikings and the Seattle Seahawks will be played on Sunday December 22 at Lumen Field in Seattle with kick off at 4:05 p.m. ET / 1:05 p.m. PT.
