Will Harrison Butker be at the White House with the Chiefs after criticizing Joe Biden?
The Super Bowl champions annually visit the President of the United States, with Butker in attendance with the Kansas City Chiefs last year.
The Super Bowl winners being honoured at the White House by the President of the United States has been a regular occurrence since Ronald Reagan was in office, and the Kansas City Chiefs have become frequent visitors after three championship wins in five years, the most recent of which saw them defeat the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII in February.
Tight end Travis Kelce stole the show with his own comedy routine on the team’s last visit in 2023, although the 2024 reunion may be a slightly tenser affair given recent comments made by kicker Harrison Butker.
The 28-year-old hit the headlines a recently after giving a commencement speech at a Catholic private liberal arts school in Kansas. He first took aim at the LGBTQ community, describing Pride month as “the deadly sins sort of Pride,” and then moved onto the role of women in society, claiming his wife’s “vocation” as a “homemaker” had made his success possible.
You can read Butker’s comments in more detail here.
However, the Chiefs star also got stuck into President of the United States Joe Biden, the man he is expected to come face to face with - again - on Friday.
What did Harrison Butker say about Joe Biden?
The kicker criticized how Biden had handled a number of issues, including the covid-19 pandemic and abortion. He also used the latter topic to cast doubt on the president’s devotion to Catholicism.
“While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years,” Butker told students, “it is not unique. Bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as the growing support for degenerate cultural values in media all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.
“Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the sign of the cross during a pro-abortion rally. He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I’m sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.”
There is no suggestion that Butker, who was part of the Chiefs’ visit last year, will opt out of another trip to the White House, despite his views on how the current president has gone about his job.
When does the Kansas City Chiefs’ visit to the White House start?
The Chiefs set off from Kansas City early on Friday morning and touched down in D.C. around lunchtime. Their visit of the White House is expected to begin at around 4:00 p.m.
