The Los Angeles Chargers have everything to play for in the last four games of the regular season, which adds extra importance to their NFL week 15 matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Sunday, December 15, 4:25 p.m. ET). Coach Jim Harbaugh will therefore be desperately hoping quarterback Justin Herbert is able to play after an injury scare.

The 26-year-old has started all 13 of the Chargers’ games in 2024 but has endured a rollercoaster week ahead of the weekend clash at SoFi Stadium.

What injury does Justin Herbert have?

Herbert has been dealing with ankle and thigh issues, which forced him to miss practice on Wednesday. That set alarm bells ringing, although the volume dropped considerably after he returned to practice on Thursday, albeit in a limited capacity.

Harbaugh told the media his quarterback would be “doing everything and anything in his power to play on Sunday,” which tends to be what every coach says when not completely sure. That Herbert was involved on Thursday, however, is clearly a good sign.

How can the Chargers clinch the playoffs?

The Kansas City Chiefs have already secured the AFC West title, so the Californians’ only hope of reaching the playoffs rests with clinching a wild card spot. As it stands, their 8-5 record means they are sixth in AFC, sandwiched between the Baltimore Ravens and the Denver Broncos, also both 8-5.

With two games remaining, things are looking good for the Chargers to secure a top-seven finish. The Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins, eighth and ninth respectively, are both 6-7 and are running out of time to make up the gap to the teams above them.
