Russell Wilson is clear about his future with the Steelers: the decision has been made
Despite another disappointing campaign, the Steelers’ quarterback has made it clear he’d like to return to the team next season. Will he get his wish?
The Steelers Wild Card Weekend loss to the Baltimore Ravens marked the team’s sixth straight playoff loss which is tied for the longest active postseason losing streak. Needless to say, there are changes coming but there is one player who is hoping that won’t apply to him.
Russell Wilson wants to stay in Pittsburgh
It’s no secret that Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson wants to stay with the team, but he once again made that clear during the locker room clean-out. Speaking with the media, the 36-year-old playmaker reiterated his desire to stay put.
“That’s the plan,” Wilson said of staying with the franchise. “I love it here and everything else, and I think we have a great football team. Obviously, it didn’t end the way we wanted it to, and I think there’s a lot more to do.” Wilson went on to acknowledge that there had been no discussions between himself and the front office as yet, however, he remains hopeful that when they do occur, they will go in his favor. “I think they’ve known that I’ve always wanted to be here and play here, but it is also a process,” Wilson continued. “We haven’t had those meetings yet, so we will have those and we’ll go from there.”
Wilson’s position is understandable when considering that he signed with the Steelers on a one-year, $1.2 million contract back in March of 2024. Admittedly, the team’s campaign did not go the way they hoped, however, Wilson himself produced performances that have to be recognized as better than many would have predicted. The veteran threw for a total of 2,482 yards, 16 touchdowns, and five interceptions. Indeed, his ability was on show on Saturday despite the season-ending playoff loss.
“I thought I played well,” Wilson said on Monday. “There’s moments I wish I played a little bit better. I feel like I had two plays that I wish I had back, just to be honest with you. The one in Kansas City and the one in the Ravens game. Other than that, those two plays in particular, I competed, and I gave it my all. Obviously felt like we didn’t play good enough when we needed to as a team. I hated missing games. I hated missing those first six games. I don’t really miss games like that and that kind of was disappointing, but I love how guys made plays.”
At this point, it remains unclear whether the franchise will hold on to Wilson or not but based on the way he and the team were performing earlier in the season, one would have to think there is a good chance that they will. Of course, it will also depend on his salary and its effect on the cap. On the other hand, one can’t dismiss the reality of the situation here and now i.e., the Steelers’ campaign ended in disappointing fashion and Wilson was part of that. To that end, there may be a reset on the horizon. Watch this space.
