The city of New Orleans has been rocked by a New Year’s Day attack, in which a reported 15 people have died after a man drove a truck into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street. Due to take place hours later, the Sugar Bowl was postponed for 24 hours as a result, while the city is due to host Super Bowl LIX in a matter of weeks.

When and where is Super Bowl 2025?

Super Bowl LIX is due to take place at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday, February 9. That will be five and a half weeks after the deadly attack took place. It is scheduled to be the eighth Super Bowl played in the Superdome and the 11th in the city of New Orleans.

Could the Super Bowl be moved away from New Orleans?

According to ESPN reporter Laura Rutledge, who is in New Orleans covering the Sugar Bowl, the authorities are fully focused on ensuring the college football game, moved to Thursday, January 2, goes ahead without any issues, before thinking further ahead.

Speaking to ABC News, Rutledge said the following when asked whether there were any concerns over the city hosting the Super Bowl:

“Certainly, that’s an aspect of this. New Orleans is a city that has hosted many big events and they’re well prepared for that.

“There’s been an influx of law enforcement, the FBI. They’ve been meeting with college football playoff officials as well as Sugar Bowl officials, making sure they’re doing everything possible to ensure safety for everyone. I believe that at this point the focus is on this Sugar Bowl, this situation right now.

They’ll turn their attention to the Super Bowl, certainly, as they carry on. But there are so many people on the ground here to help with this that I imagine New Orleans will do everything possible to ensure that the Super Bowl is in good condition going forward".
