Will the Dallas Cowboys bench Ezekiel Elliott?

The Dallas Cowboys suffered their third loss at home this season on Sunday, and the most humiliating yet as the Detroit Lions defeated them 47-9 at AT&T Stadium. It’s hard to know where to begin talking about the glaring issues on all sides of the ball, but the one consistent problem all season has been their inability to run the ball.

During the offseason, the Cowboys let Tony Pollard go to Tennessee and then frustrated fans to no end by avoiding every running back in the NFL Draft. Instead, Jerry Jones placed all his trust in their former back Ezekiel Elliott. A lot of good that’s done.

Will the Cowboys bench Zeke?

Will the Cowboys and should the Cowboys bench Zeke are two totally different questions with likely two totally different answers. Sometimes the things Jerry does can’t be explained. I’m not sure if it’s stubbornness or what, but typically his response to issues has been to just keep trying the same thing again in hopes of a different result (i.e. Jason Garrett, i.e. Mike McCarthy...).

It never made sense to bring Zeke back in the first place, but when they did, the Cowboys planned to use a committee approach with him, Rico Dowdle, and Deuce Vaughn. Zeke ended up getting way less snaps and Jones bizarrely explained that was simply because Dallas is “saving” him.

So far, Elliott has 115 yards on 38 attempts for a career-low of 3 yards per attempt. Despite that, Jones has kept him as the RB2, while the whole fanbase has been calling on the team to activate Dalvin Cook from the practice squad because, isn’t that the point of having him there? Oh, and let’s not forget, Jones also passed on Derrick Henry because he was “too expensive”.

Most teams would release Elliott after his performance this season. But not the Cowboys. If they even bench him, I would be shocked.
