Will Zach Wilson be the Denver Broncos’ starting quarterback for the 2024-25 NFL season?
The former Jets quarterback became the center of debate last season, but with a new lease on life in Denver, he could soon be set for a starting role.
It would be safe to say that Zach Wilson’s time in the ‘Big Apple’ was not enjoyable, from being benched to taking the heat from retired veterans of the NFL, the signal caller most definitely had a rough ride. Yet, it could just be that things are about to change.
Zach Wilson could be in line for the Broncos’ starting job
According to reports, Zach Wilson, who is currently listed as the Denver Broncos’ third-string quarterback on the depth chart behind rookie Bo Nix and returning backup Jarrett Stidham, could soon be the team’s starting quarterback. As per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the former New York Jets quarterback is “in the mix” to be named as QB1 ahead of the 2024-25 season. To be clear, there has been no official word from head coach Sean Payton as to who will fill that role, meaning we’ve got a three-horse race for the role this offseason.
“They’re trying to regain his confidence again,” Fowler said. “I’m told he’s in a positive state of mind.” It’s worth noting that despite all of the issues Wilson faced in New York - the Jets benched him at one point last season - he was officially the starting quarterback in each of the three seasons that he’s played in the league. In total, the former No. 2 overall pick has a record of 12-21 across the starts that he’s made in his career so far. Wilson was of course traded to the Broncos this past April.
As for his competition, the word on the ground is that it’s Nix who is favored to land the starting job. Selected with the No. 12 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft out of Oregon, the 24-year-old broke Mac Jones’s previous record for the highest single-season completion percentage at 77.45%, while leading the NCAA in pass completions, completion percentage, and passing touchdowns in 2023. Stidham on the other hand, has been with the Broncos since last year when he signed a two-year, $10 million contract with the Broncos. In his time so far, he’s started two games for the team, winning one. This is all to say, it’s in Zach Wilson’s hands now.
