Update:

The NFC South will be decided in Week 18.

With the Carolina Panthers falling 27–10 to the Seattle Seahawks and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers losing a tight 20–17 contest to the Miami Dolphins in Week 17, the division race now comes down to one final game. The Buccaneers will host the Panthers next weekend, with the NFC South title, and the division’s lone playoff berth, on the line.

Both teams stumbled at critical moments Sunday, but neither was eliminated. Instead, their losses simply delayed the inevitable: a winner-take-all showdown to close the regular season.

NFC South: Where things stand entering Week 18

The Panthers enter Week 18 at 8–8, still holding first place in the NFC South. Tampa Bay sits just behind them at 7–9, but controls the tiebreakers in several key scenarios.

Here’s how the division looks heading into the finale:

TeamOverallDivisionConference
Panthers8–83–26–5
Buccaneers7–92–35–6

No other team in the division remains in contention, meaning the NFC South title will be decided solely between these two teams. There are no Wild-Card paths available. The NFC South champion is the only team from the division reaching the postseason.

Panthers’ path: Win and they’re in

For Carolina, the formula is simple:

  • Win in Week 18 at Tampa Bay = NFC South champions
  • Loss = eliminated

A Panthers win would give them a 9–8 record and their first division title since 2015, with no need for tiebreakers. It would cap a remarkable turnaround season under head coach Dave Canales and quarterback Bryce Young.

Despite losing in Seattle, Carolina still controls its destiny. Week 17’s loss only delayed the clinch, but it didn’t change the path.

Buccaneers’ path to the playoffs

Tampa Bay also has a clear, though narrower, route:

  • Win in Week 18 vs Carolina = NFC South champions
  • Loss = eliminated

If the Buccaneers win, both teams would finish 8–9, sending the division to tiebreakers. Tampa Bay would advance based on the common games tiebreaker, which currently favors the Bucs.

That makes Week 18 a true win-and-in scenario for Tampa Bay as well, which is seeking to defend its division title and extend its season.

How Week 17 losses changed the landscape

Both teams entered Week 17 with a chance to clinch early, and both missed it.

  • Carolina needed a win plus a Buccaneers loss or tie.
  • Tampa Bay needed help of its own to stay alive long-term.

Instead, both losses simplified the picture. There are no longer multiple scenarios, scoreboard watching, or outside help involved.

The division will be decided head-to-head.

The Buccaneers will host the Panthers in Week 18, with kickoff time expected to be announced after the league finalizes its schedule. Given the win-and-in stakes, the game is a strong candidate for a standalone window.

In the NFC South, it rarely comes easy, and fittingly, it all comes down to one final Sunday.
