United States lead medal table after day 12

That, ladies and gentleman, is that for day 12 of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris! The United States continue to lead the medal table with 27 golds (94 medals overall) from China (25 golds, 65 overall), helped by Quincy Hall's unexpected gold in the men's 400m! But perhaps Australia were the day's biggest winners, taking four golds in fairly quick succession to move into third spot. 

Much, much more on its way tomorrow, the highlight of which might be the men's 200m final (at 2:30pm ET). See you then!

Boxing gold for Ukraine's Khyzhniak!

Three years after winning a silver medal in the 75kg men's boxing tournament in Tokyo, Ukraine's Oleksandr Khyzhniak has stepped up to 80kg and won gold! He defeated Kazakhstan's Nurbek Oralbay 3-2 in the final. Cristian Pinales of the Dominican Republic and Cuba's Arlen López get a bronze each.

Boxing gold for Cuba's Alvarez!

Fancy some more boxing? Here we go! Cuba's Erislandy Álvarez takes gold in the men's 63.5kg, beating France's Sofiane Oumiha, who gets a silver.Wyatt Sanford of Canada and Georgia's Lasha Guruli get a bronze each.

Team USA aiming for water polo medal

The United States are also in the hunt for a water polo medal after they progressed to the semifinals of the men's competition for the first time since 2008, defeating Australia after extra time on Wednesday. They will take on Serbia in the last four, with Croatia facing Hungary in the other match-up.

Boxing bronzes for Germany and France!

The men's +92kg semi-finals have just taken place, with Germany's Nelvie Raman Tiafack and France's Djamili-Dini Aboudou Moindze both losing to 5-0 unanimous decisions. They get bronzes for their efforts though. 

Spain's Ayoub Ghadfa will face Bakhodir Jalolov of Uzbekistan in the final.

Team USA to fight for bronze in men's volleyball

Team USA's hope of clinching a gold medal in volleyball is over after they were defeated by Poland in the semifinals. They can, however, still clinch a bronze. The States will take on Italy in the third-place game, with France facing the Poles for gold.

Lin Yu-Ting into the semifinals at the 2024 Olympics: The other female boxer facing scrutiny in Paris

Who is Lin Yu-ting? 

The condition of Algerian boxer Imane Khelif has hit the headlines at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, although it has now come to light that some are also unhappy about Lin Yu-ting competing in the women's tournament.

Bronze medals for Turkey and Philippines in boxing!

Esra Yildiz of Türkiye and Philippines' Nesthy Petecio will take bronze medals in the women's 57kg boxing tournament after losing in the semifinals to Lin Yu-ting or Taiwan and Poland’s Julia Szeremeta respectively. 

Lin Yu-ting and Szeremeta will face off for gold in the final on Saturday, August 10. In case you recognise the name Lin Yu-ting, there may be a reason why, linked to this controversial social media post.

By my reckoning, there should still be more medals on the way in boxing...and that's about it. The outcomes of these events are still to be decided today and will have a say in who medals of which color:

Taekwondo gold for Park Taejoon of the Republic of Korea!

He's only 20, but he's an Olympic champion! Park Taejoon takes the men's 58kg goldin taekwondo for the Republic of Korea, beating Azerbaijan's Gashim Magomedov, who withdrew in the second round, in the final.  Mohamed Khalil Jendoubi of Tunisia and France's Cyrian Ravet both take home bronze medals.

Wrestling gold for Team USA's Sarah Hildebrandt!

Team USA have scooped up another one of those gold medals! Their first in about half an hour. This time it's in the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling event and it's for Sarah Hildebrandt! She defeated Cuba's Yusneylis Guzman in the final after Vinesh Phogat of India had been disqualified earlier today for missing weight. Bronzes went to both. Feng Ziqi of China and Japan's Susaki Yui.

Weightlifting gold for China's Hou Zhihui!

Let's just keep the medals coming, shall we? Hou Zhihui is next to claim gold for China in the women's 49kg weightlifting event, breaking the clean and jerk Olympic record along the way. Mihaela Cambei of Romania is close behind and takes silver, with the bronze going to Thailand's Surodchana Khambao.

Steeplechase gold for Morocco's El Bakkali!

No rest for the wicked. This time it's Morocco who are celebrating, as Soufiane El Bakkali retains his Olympic title in the men's 3000m steeplechase! And there's a silver for the USA, with Kenneth Rooks coming in just behind El Bakkali in second. Kenya's Abraham Kibiwot takes the bronze in a tight race.

Panipak Wongpattanakit takes taekwondo gold for Thailand!

Thailand's Panipak Wongpattanakit has taken the gold medal in the 49kg women's taekwondo tournament for the second Olympics running! She defeated China's Guo Qing 2-1 in a best-of-three final, with Mobina Nematzadeh of Islamic Republic of Iran and Lena Stojkovic of Croatia both taking home bronzes. 

Wongpattanakit becomes Thailand's first ever two-time Olympic champion, I believe. 

These medals are coming in thick and fast, my goodness.

Gold for Australia in the women's pole vault!

Australia are at it again! Nina Kennedy has taken the gold medal in the women's pole vault, edging out Team USA's Katie Moon, who takes the silver.Canada's Alysha Newman comes in third, scooping up a bronze

That's now four gold medals for Australia today, what a Wednesday! That's catapulted them right up the medal table! And another one to add to Team USA's overall total.

Gold medal and Olympic record for Jamaica's Stona!

Roje Stona has become the first man in Olympic history to throw beyond 70m in the men's discuss! Naturally, he claims the gold medal ahead of Mykolas Alenka of Lithuania and Australia's Matthew Denny, who take silver and bronze respectively.

Quincy Hall's unexpected gold?

Is Quincy Hall's gold in the 400m unexpected? I'm going to say, yes. GB's Matthew Hudson-Smith had been the favourite to take the gold but has been usurped by a brilliant run from the American. 

That might make the gold even sweeter.

Gold for Hall and Team USA in the men's 400m!

The meals are flying thick and fast! Quincy Hall has won Team USA's latest gold medal in the men's 400m, setting a PB of 43.30. Great Britain's Matthew Hudson-Smith grabs the silver medal, with Muzala Samukonga of Zambia getting the bronze. 

Most of the glory goes to Hall, although Hudson-Smith has set a new European record (43.44) and Samukonga a new national record (43.74). A top effort all round from the lads.

Wrestling gold for Iran!

Move over Australia...a first gold medal of the 2024 Olympic Games for Iran! And it goes to Mohammadhadi Saravi, who has out-pointed (if that's a word) Armenia's Artur Aleksanyan 4-1 in the men's Greco-Roman 97kg event. 

Cuba's Gabriel Rosillo and Uzur Dzhuzupbekov of Kyrgyzstan both claim bronze medals.

Another first for China

China picked up their 24th gold medal at Paris 2024 as their team won the women's artistic swimming acrobatic routine event with a massive score of 996.1389.

Team USA take silver after finishing on 914.3421 with Spain in third, securing bronze on 900.7319.

Japan seal wrestling gold

Japan's Kusaka Nao scored a 5-2 victory on points to beat Kazakhstan's Demeu Zhadrayev to the gold medal in the men's 77kg Greco-Roman class final.

The 23-year-old picked up bronze in last year's World Championships but will be thrilled with his first Olympic medal.

Team USA pip New Zealand to women's team pursuit gold

Team USA took the women's team pursuit gold medal, with a time of 4:04.306, just outside the world record of 4:04.242 set by Germany at Tokyo 2020.

New Zealand clocked 4:04.927 to take silver, with Team GB already having bagged bronze.

Third gold medal of the afternoon for Australia

A hugely successful afternoon just got even better for Australia who won the men's team pursuit gold, finishing on 3:42.067 ahead of Team GB on 3:44.394. Italy take bronze.

The Australian team (Oliver Bleddyn, Sam Welsford, Conor Leahy, Kelland O'Brien) set a new world record time of 3:40.730 in yesterday's qualifying heats.

This is the Aussie's first men's team pursuit gold since Athens 2004.

Gold again for Keegan Palmer!

Australia's Keegan Palmer was the first Olympic champion, winning the inaugural men's park event at Tokyo 2020 and he retained his title in Paris, scoring 93.11.

Team USA's Tom Schaar takes silver with 92.23 and Brazil's Augusto Akio goes home with bronze with his final run scoring 91.85.

Absolutely Fabin!

Li Fabin lifted 143kg on his third attempt to set a new Olympic record, then added a 167kg clean and jerk to bring his total to a total of 310kg and win the gold medal. 

Thailand's Theerapong Silachai took silver with 303kg, and Team USA's Hampton Morris secured bronze with 298kg.

Another gold for Australia

Australia sit third in the medal table and they added another gold to their tally in recent minutes. Matt Wearn has picked up a gold medal in the men's Dinghy sailing competition, adding to the gold he won in the the Laser event in Tokyo. 

Australia's tally of 15 gold medals in Paris is behind only the United States and China.

Back-to-back titles for wizard of Oz Matt Wearn

Matt Wearntook Australia's gold medal count to 15 by winning the men's Laser Radial event with a total net score of 40.

Wearn collects his second Olympic gold after ending on the podium in Tokyo.

Cyprus' Pavlos Kontides came in second on on 56 points and Peru's Stefano Peschiera, third on 80.

Mijaín López ends with incredible 100% Olympic record

It's a record that outdoes every other Olympic achievement. Cuban wrestler Mijaín López is the only athlete even to win five consecutive gold medals in the same event, a run that stretches back to the 2008 Games in Beijing. Now 41, López has won all 20 of his Olympic bouts, an incredible unbeaten run spanning two decades

Bouwmeester makes history

Marit Bouwmeester became the most successful woman in Olympic sailing history after clinching the gold medal in the Laser Radial event. 

It's her fourth Olympic medal, she won gold at Rio 2016, silver at London 2012 and bronze at Tokyo 2020.

Joining on her the podium in Paris are Denmark's Anne-Marie Rindom (silver) and Norway's Line Flem (bronze)..

Irish star celebrates boxing gold

Ireland's Kellie Harrington is back home, celebrating her victory in Paris. Harrington announced that she would retire after clinching a second gold medal, ending her Olympic career at the top of her game. 

“I’m done and dusted,” Harrington said. “I’m going to go out a champion. That’s the way I want to go out. I don’t want to go out and lose a fight and then retire. I’ll retire happy.”

Can Moon defend pole vault title?

Today in track and field, Team USA’s medal hopes are headlined by Katie Moon, who will seek her second straight Olympic title in the women’s pole vault final.

That gold-medal event is scheduled to start at 12:15pm ET.

Another major moment will come in the men’s 400m final, which involves three US athletes - Christopher Bailey, Quincy Hall and 2022 world champion Michael Norman.

The 400m final is due to take place at 3:20pm.

Hocker: "I always dreamt but never believed"

Speaking to NBC after his surprise win in the men's 1500m final yesterday, Team USA's Cole Hocker said he was aware as he crossed the finish line that his life will now never be the same.

“I’m still processing, but I just had the vivid thought of how my life just changed, and can’t even process that right now," Hocker said.

“It’s just unbelievable [to be only the fourth American to win Olympic gold in the 1500m]. I saw that list, I’ve seen the list of just champions that have come before me, and I always dreamt but never believed, like, that I would be in the same breath of those guys.

"But as I’ve progressed through my career I’ve gotten closer and closer and now it just truly [is] an honour.”

Women's golf gets going in Guyancourt

The women's golf tournament is underway at Le Golf National, where Team USA's Nelly Korda is bidding to win back-to-back Olympic titles.

Korda is the bookmakers' favourite for gold, ahead of Thailand’s Atthaya Thitikul and fellow American Lilia Vu.

Spain have won the marathon race walk mixed relay, the duo of Martina Pérez and Álvaro Martín claiming gold in a time of 2:50:31.

Silver went to Ecuador's Glenda Morejón and Brian Pintado, and Australia's Rhydian Cowley and Jemima Montag took bronze.

Golden Gabby

Another headline US medal winner yesterday was Gabby Thomas, who won America's first women's 200m gold since 2012.

Having won bronze in Tokyo three years ago, Thomas claimed her first Olympic crown with a time of 21.83 in Paris, beating 100m champion Julien Alfred into second. The USA's Brittany Brown took bronze.

Hocker pulls off 1500m upset

Among Team USA's gold-medal winners yesterday was Cole Hocker, who claimed a stunning victory in the men's 1500m final.

Hocker took gold ahead of the two hot favourites, Britain's Josh Kerr and Norway's Jakob Ingebrigtsen - and did so in an Olympic-record time.

The USA's Yared Neguse won bronze behind Kerr in second, leaving America with two men on the 1500m podium for the first time since the Stockholm Summer Games 112 years ago.

USA clear of China in medal table

After day 11, Team USA have daylight at the top of the medals table, having taken a two-gold lead over second-placed China: 24 to 22.

The Americans are bidding to win the medal count for the fourth straight Summer Games, and for the seventh time in the last eight.

Since 1992, the only time the USA haven't finished first in the standings was Beijing 2008, when hosts China led the way.
