Kipchoge confirms end of Olympic career

Given he's 39, it doesn't come as a huge surprise, but two-time marathon gold medalist Eliud Kipchoge has confirmed the end of his Olympic career after failing to finish the 2024 race.

“It is a difficult time for me,” he admitted after dropping out just after the 30km mark after an hour and about 40 seconds of running, with a discomfort around his waist.

"This is my worst marathon. I have never done a DNF (did not finish). That’s life. Like a boxer, I have been knocked down, I have won, I have come second, eighth, 10th, fifth – now I did not finish. That’s life.

“You will see me in a different way (in Los Angeles), maybe giving people motivation, but I will not run. I don't know what's next. I need to go back [home], sit down, try to figure my 21 years of running at high level. I need to evolve and feature in other things.”

It's early days on Saturday, so there's been no change at the top of the Olympic medal table. Team USA still lead from China, although both headed into the penultimate day of action having won 33 golds. How likely are their positions to change? Well, it depends...

Here's why.

Kipchoge "fails to finish" Olympic men's marathon

Not the day Eliud Kipchoge was hoping for. The Kenyan won gold medals in the men's marathon in 2016 and 2020 (2021) but seemingly dropped out of the 2024 race after 30km, although has yet to be officially confirmed by the IOC. At one stage, he was seen holding his side, which suggests he wasn't feeling in great shape.

Eliud Kipchoge's Olympic marathon treble dream over

Eliud Kipchoge has won the last two Olympic marathons, but it doesn't look as if he's going to be completing a treble. The Kenyan, after a steady start, has dropped way down the field, with Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola now out in front.

If you did take me up on my offer to watch the second part of the men's marathon, you'll sadly not have the chance to watch the extraordinary talents of Kelvin Kiptum. The Kenyan runner would've been the red-hot favourite to take the gold medal had tragedy not struck just a few months ago. His marathon record was quite something.

Team USA face France in first of basketball double header

Is this the highlight of day 15? Will it also be the highlight of day 16 tomorrow? For the first time ever in the Olympics, the men's and women's basketball finals will be contested by the same two countries - Team USA and France.

On the men's side, the United States have won 16 of the 19 tournaments they have played in. On the women's, they've won nine times out of 11. Can they extend those incredible records in 2024?
