The United States men’s basketball team started this Paris 2024 Olympic Games group stage tournament with a clear objective: take the gold medal.

To win gold, you need a team that shines, and that is why coach Steve Kerr decided to bring some of the NBA’s best players, including LeBron James. The 39-year-old Los Angeles Lakers player was one of the US flag bearers in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games opening ceremony and played in the starting five in the Americans’ 110-84 win against Serbia on matchday one.

“It was great. Sitting there listening to our national anthem, you know, listening to the fans cheer, I definitely got a little nervous,” said LeBron after returning to the team since he did not play in the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

However, this is not King James’ first Olympic appointment; he has already participated in three editions of the Games. As expected from a legend, LeBron James ranks third among the United States’ top scorers in the Olympic Games. With his 21 points scored in the Paris 2024 tournament opener, he reached 291 in total and is only 63 points behind the top two, Carmelo Anthony and Kevin Durant.

How many games has LeBron James played at the Olympic Games?

LeBron James’s first Olympic Games were in Athens in 2004, when he won the NBA’s Rookie of the Year award. He was the youngest player on the team, but his debut in the Olympic Games was not what he dreamed of. The United States was eliminated in the semifinals against Argentina and had to settle for the bronze medal. He was present in the eight games that the team played, registering 11.5 minutes per game (mpg), averaging 5.4 points per game and 5.4 rebounds.

In the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, LeBron led the undefeated “Redemption Team” to get back on track and pursue golden success. The Los Angeles Lakers player was fundamental in the USA’s eight games, averaging even more mpg (24.8), points per game (15.5) and rebounds (5.3). The Americans won 118-107 against Spain in the final.

But a gold medal is not enough for the King. In 2012, when he was named NBA MVP, James was on the US squad that also went undefeated at the London Olympic Games and won the gold medal against Spain in the final. Once again, LeBron played the eight games of the tournament and kept stats similar to the previous Olympic Games edition: he averaged 24.9 mpg, 13.3 points, and 5.6 rebounds.

With the games against Serbia and South Sudan, LeBron James has played 26 games with the USA basketball Olympic Team and hopes to win another gold medal in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
