As the USA continue their bid for a fifth straight men’s basketball gold medal, Steve Kerr’s men face a Brazil team containing a number of faces that will be familiar to basketball fans in the States.

How did Brazil qualify for the QFs?

Having topped Group C with three wins from three, the USA meet the Brazilians in the Olympic quarter-finals in Paris, after Aleksander Petrovic’s men snuck into the knockout stages with a matchday-three win over Japan. Brazil had lost their first two group games, but victory over the Japanese was enough to take them through as one of the two best third-placed teams.

Bronze medallists in 1948, 1960 and 1964, Brazil are at Paris 2024 after emerging from the FIBA Olympic qualifying competition in early July, winning a final against Latvia in Riga to seal their ticket to France.

Which Brazil players have NBA experience?

A team captained by Spain-based Marcelino Huertas, who plies his trade for Tenerife after spending two seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers between 2015 and 2017, Brazil have one current NBA player in their 12-man roster. That man is Gui Santos, who plays under Team USA head coach Steve Kerr at the Golden State Warriors. Since signing a three-year contract with the Warriors in November, Santos has made 24 appearances for the Californians.

Huertas aside, Brazil have several other former NBA players on their roster.

Bruno Caboclo, who now plays for Partizan in Serbia, was a first-round Draft pick for the Toronto Raptors in 2014, and went on to spend four years with the Canadian franchise. Caboclo, 28, also had spells in North America with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Houston Rockets.

Raul Neto had eight years in the NBA with Utah Jazz, Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards and the Cleveland Cavaliers, playing over 450 games in the league from 2015 to 2023. Cristiano Felício, who is currently with Granada in Spain, also has a significant NBA stint on his resumé, featuring more than 250 times across six seasons with the Chicago Bills, having moved to Illinois in 2015.

Finally, Didi Louzada made a handful of appearances for the New Orleans Pelicans and the Portland Trail Blazers between 2020 and 2022, before returning to Brazil to join Flamengo.
