The former USWNT player became a soccer women’s icon thanks to her accomplishments and talent. But did she succeed in the Olympic Games?

The 2024 Olympic Games are underway and the US delegation is looking to make a big impact in Paris.

One of the sports where the Americans want to clinch a medal is the women’s Olympic soccer tournament, where they are among the favorites.

Twila Kilgore’s women will fight alongside national teams like Spain, Germany, and France for a place on the podium. In their last Summer Games in Tokyo three years ago, Team USA clinched the bronze medal after beating Australia in the third-place match.

The Americans have positively started the event, with two wins in their first two games. Led by Lindsey Horan, the USWNT thrashed Germany and Zambia, leading the Group B standings with six points, being the best side alongside Spain in the tournament so far.

How successful was USWNT star Mia Hamm in the Olympics?

Unlike their male colleagues, the women’s US national team has traditionally dominated soccer in the Olympics.

The Americans won the gold medal four times since the inaugural edition in 1996. The US clinched gold that year and also reigned supreme in 2004, 2008, and 2012.

One of the key players who helped the USWNT be that successful in the past was former star Mia Hamm. She played as a forward for the national team from 1987 to 2004, with 276 appearances and 158 goals.

The Alabama native, named US Soccer Female Athlete of the Year five consecutive times and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001 and 2002, enjoyed great success as a USWNT member, including Olympic glory.

Hamm played in 42 matches and scored 14 goals in the three Olympic Games she competed in. She won two gold medals in 1996 and 2004, while she helped the team win the silver in the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney.

With her scoring, competitive spirit, and all-around skills, the former Washington Freedom player also helped Team USA to win the World Cup on two occasions (1991 and 1999).
