Katie Ledecky sealed her place in the women’s 800m freestyle swimming race at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Saturday at the US Olympic Swimming Team Trials, which came to the surprise of absolutely nobody. However, she did so by making history in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Ledecky makes US Olympic trials history in 800m freestyle

The 27-year-old, who has seven Olympic gold medals to her name in the 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m and 4x200m freestyle relay races, became the first woman in history to win four titles in the same event at the US Olympic trials.

Ledecky’s winning time of 8:14.12, however, wasn’t quite enough to beat the fastest time set in the 800m this year by Canadian swimmer Summer McIntosh (8:11.39). That suggests the American could face some stern competition when the real thing comes around in Paris in a few weeks’ time.

However, the fact Ledecky has recorded 29 of the 30 fastest times in the history of the event means she will still be the firm favourite to claim yet another gold medal.

Which events will Ledecky race in at the 2024 Olympics? What gold medals does she have?

The Maryland native is set to feature in the 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle, 1500m freestyle and 4x200m relay events in the French capital.

Ledecky has taken part in three Olympic Games, with her first victory coming in the 800m freestyle in London in 2012, when she was just 15.

Four years later in Rio de Janeiro, she won four golds, in the 200m, 400m and 800m freestyle races, as well as in the 4x200m freestyle. In the last Games on Tokyo in 2020, Ledecky won her third 800m gold, and her first in the 1500m freestyle race.
