Lindsey Vonn update: Skiing great returns to operating table after horror Olympics crash
After crashing out of the women’s downhill on Sunday, U.S. star Vonn is in hospital and has now undergone surgery twice.

American skier Lindsey Vonn was on Sunday at the center of one of the most dramatic moments of the 2026 Winter Games.
Just days after her brutal crash in a World Cup race - a fall that left her with a torn ACL in her left knee - she took part in the women’s downhill event in Cortina d’Ampezzo, a decision many labeled equal parts heroic and reckless.
But the hoped‑for epic comeback never materialized. Instead, Vonn suffered a devastating crash only 13 seconds into her run, plunging the crowd into stunned silence.
What injury does Vonn have?
She was transported to Treviso Hospital, where surgeons operated on her left leg. The medical statement noted a fracture but did not specify the exact location. She was admitted to the intensive care unit following the procedure.

Vonn needs second operation - why?
Vonn returned to the operating room on Monday, after the medical team determined a second surgery was necessary due to significant swelling in the injured leg - swelling that was compromising blood circulation and putting her at risk.
The 41-year-old’s personal physician has flown in from the United States to assist and oversee the process, though the intervention was led by the local medical team.
