USWNT 1-0 Germany (AET): full-time thoughts
Not a classic game by any means, and it became clear early on there was a good chance it could go to extra time.
The USWNT started very brightly, with three shots on target inside seven minutes, but quickly faded as Germany grew into the match.
Chances to score were relatively few and far between, with Alyssa Naeher making the best save in regulation time from Klara Bühl in the first half.
Germany were marginally the better team for most of the second period without really creating clear-cut chances to score. And they were eventually made to pay as the USA came back to life towards the end of the game.
Mal Swanson led the American charge, causing problems for Germany with her movement. And the forward set up what proved to be the only goal of the game at the start of extra time, playing Sophia Smith clean through to score.
The USWNT had to soak up pressure towards the end of the game, as was expected, and only a superb stop from Naeher prevented Germany from taking the semifinal to a penalty shootout.
Brazil or Spain await in the final as the USA look for their first gold medal in the competition in 12 years.

Since Swanson went off, it's been all Germany. The USWNT are struggling to get out, which seemed inevitable.

Nervy indeed...Minge swings at Gwinn corner, her shots flicks off Brand and could go anywhere. As it happens, it ends up in Naeher's gloves. Phew for the USWNT.
Gwinn skips away down the right again and wins a corner off Nighswonger. This is going to be nervy...
The danger now for the USA is that those defensive changes will result in them sitting deep and inviting pressure. And that isn't always a great idea, especially with almost 10 minutes left to play.

There is supposed to be a one-minute turnaround between the two halves of extra time. That, I can tell you, is not being observed here.

Sophia Smith's goal in the early stages of the first half of extra time is the difference between the teams so far. 15 minutes to go!
One minute of injury time to be played.
The USWNT live dangerously from a corner. Naeher punches rather than catches, although two German players try and fail to get efforts in on goal, and the danger is over.

That should've been 2-0! Smith is played through on goal, comes in on the angle from the left but her low shot isn't far enough in the corner, allowing Berger to save with her feet!
Rodman shoots over!
Rodman also looks full of confidence all of a sudden. She tries her luck from the edge of the box but her shot on goal flies just over the crossbar.
Swanson is right in the mood now. She has been for the last 15 or 20 minutes. She skips past several German players as if they're not there, although eventually overruns the ball on the edge of the box.
Brand looks to make inroads down the Germany left. She breaks into the box but Girma (who else?) comes across to mop up the danger. The centre-back has been absolutely faultless once again!
Rodman shot deflected wide!
All of sudden, the USA are free-flowing. Rodman cuts in from the right and sees her shot on goal deflected just wide for a corner kick.
Well, well, well. What can Germany do about this? That is HUGE!
Finally! Swanson slides the ball in behind the German defence, Berger races off her line and Smith slots it past her and into the net!

The USWNT have made the brighter start to the half. First, Rodman's low cross from the right is cut out before Swanson continues where she left off by shooting wide from the edge of the box.

Not much of a break for the players here. We're about to get going again in Lyon!
USWNT - Germany: what happens next?
In both the men's and women's Olympic tournament, 30 minutes of extra time (two periods of 15 minutes) is played if the teams are level after 90 minutes. After that, the dreaded penalty shootout if they still can't be separated.

Naeher gives USWNT fright
Bühl floats a free-kick into the box and Naeher juggles it with a German player nearby before safely catching it. Phew.
The first three minutes of injury time have been more about not conceding a late goal rather than scoring a late one. Not much time left.
Unless something strange happens, it looks for all the world as if we're going to extra time. Remember, in the Olympic Games, there are both extra time and penalties if the two teams can't be separated.
Five minutes of injury time to be played.
The USWNT do look to be finishing the stronger of the two teams. But can they find a breakthrough? Or are we going to extra-time?
Swanson has suddenly come to life! Another through ball into the channel, another low cross, this time gathered by Berger.
Girma feeds a lovely ball through for Swanson, whose low cross is ushered away by a pink/purple jersey.
Swanson scores...offside!
The USWNT have the ball in the net...! But it's offside. Swanson was clearly ahead of the last defender before firing in from a tight angle. A neat finish, though.
Ahhhh, what a waste! Swanson gets the ball in a great position and runs towards goalward, with Smith ahead of her. She tries to feed it through but overhits the pass, which runs through to Berger.
Swanson drifts out to the left into space but hoists a cross high behind the goal. Not great.
Horan now lines one up from the edge of the box, but her shot is blocked almost as soon as it leaves her boot.
Rodman shot saved!
The USWNT have come back to life a little bit here. Rodman is at the heart of it, feeding a nice pass through into the box before firing in a low shot, which Berger saves relatively comfortably.
Horan goes close!
Almost the breakthrough! It wouldn't have been pretty, but they all count. A corner is half-cleared and bobbles about in the box before Horan heads goalwards from just a few yards out. Berger gets across well to make the save!
Germany substitution
Hegering does indeed go off, with Schulze sent on in her place.
A little break in play as Hegering is down. It looks as if the German defender might have to be replaced.
That was a big tackle from Sonnett! Freigang would've been clean through on goal were it not for the defender's sliding challenge.
Something needs to change for the USWNT in attack. That Swanson (offside) chance aside, they're creating nothing.
Minge shot saved!
We hadn't had a shot on target for a while, but we've had one now! Minge lines one up from the edge of the box, but that's catching practice for Naeher, if we're being honest.
The USWNT work the ball from left to right to Rodman, who tries to feed a pass into Swanson in the box, but misplaces it from five yards away.
Brand, who has been very impressive so far, goes on a driving run into the box, waltzes past Dunn but, like Anyomi before her, is unable to pick out a teammate in the penalty area when she possibly should've done.

Fresh legs for Germany in attack. Anyomi is off, replaced by Laura Freigang.
Were having an impromptu water break, which wasn't part of the schedule, as far as I'm aware.

That was poor from Anyomi. A mistake lets her in down the right, she breaks into the box but plays a poor ball across goal, which is easily cut out.
It's almost impossible to tell if, or when, a goal is coming. At the moment, the two teams are back to cancelling each other out, on the whole.
I was just typing that plenty had been made about the USWNT's attacking trio of Rodman, Swanson and Smith at the Olympics, but that Germany had done brilliantly to keep them at bay. I hadn't typed 'Swanson' more than a couple of times until that momoent.
Oh, please excuse my excitement there. Swanson was offside, so it wouldn't have counted.

By far the best chance of the game! Girma plays a brilliant pass through for Swanson, who goes round Berger put shoots into the side netting!
USWNT substitution
Emma Hayes needs to shake things up. And she's trying. Lynn Williams replaces Lavelle.
Actually, it looks as if Rodman took a sore one there and it should've been foul. Nothing given though.
Rodman again tries to be direct on the right wing but is muscled out of it by Bühl before she can get a cross in.

Germany are taking the upper hand here. Gwinn gets space on the edge of the box and shoots narrowly wide!

Yet ANOTHER crucial interception from Girma! Lohman chips the ball up into the box and the defender flicks it away from Bühl just as she thinks she's going to head towards goal from the centre of the box.
Rodman tries to change all that as she races away down the right. She gets to the goal line, but her cross is straight into the hands of Berger.
The pace of play at the start of the second half has been quite a bit less than at the start of the first, to my eye.
An even start to the half so far, that Brand moment aside.

An early moment of promise for the Germans as Brand weaves her way between defenders and into the box. Her low cutback is into a dangerous area but Girma gets it away!

Germany have taken part in the women's soccer tournament at the Olympics on five previous occasions and won medals four times. They picked up bronzes in three straight Games (2000, 2004, 2008) but won the big (gold) one in Rio in 2016.

Half-time thoughts: USWNT 0-0 Germany
The USWNT made a really bright start, with three shots on target (Davidson, Lavelle, Smith) in the opening seven minutes. The first two of those were reasonably clear opportunities, but that's as good as it got for the Americans.
Germany were never truly on top at any point but will be pleased with how they responded after a shaky first 10 minutes. Naeher made the best save of the half from Bühl and the Germans have been able to get a number of crosses into the box, which the USA have generally defended well.
The USWNT have been sloppy in possession on occasion, with a number of misplaced passes in the final third stopping promising attacks.

No injury time played! Goalless at half-time!
Hegering commits a cynical foul near the touchline and is the first player in the book.
The USWNT have the chance to get Dunn away down the left but an overhit pass kills the attack dead. Not for the first time.
Rodman does well to jink past two players and come inside, she has a chance to release Swanson, but a slack pass allows Germany to clear their lines.
Rauch fizzes a cross into the USA box, Anyomi gets a touch on it and Lohmann is inches away from getting on the end at the far post!
Not too much for fans of the USWNT to shout about going into the final few minutes or the first half.
Almost a chance for the USWNT! Davidson floats a cross to the back post towards Rodman, who doesn't think she's going to get it (I don't think). Rather than control and shoot, she improvises a layoff to Smith, who can't react quickly enough to get in an effort on goal.
Bühl almost gets in behind the USWNT defence but Girma uses her pace to get back and intercept before she can break into the box. One pass, and Germany were almost in,
Germany will be considerably happier with how this game is going compared to the group fixture, which ended 4-1 to the USWNT.
Hegering showboat
It's not often you see a central defender showboat inside her own box, but that was silky from Hegering. Smith gets away down the left and tries to pick out Rodman, but the German takes a touch, drags the ball back and plays out of trouble. Cool as you like.
Another good free-kick opportunity for Lavelle, but her delivery is very well defended by Germany. No way through.

Help me out here. What are we going with colour-wise for Germany's kit? I've seen the word fuchsia being used a fair bit...is that just a fancy word for pink?

Dunn wastes crossing chance
Oh, my. That was not good from Cristal Dunn. She's in a great position down the left and slices a cross high and wide behind the goal. Badly Dunn, you might say.
Naeher saves from Bühl!
The best save of the game so far! Bühl is allowed to stroll into the box unchallenged and fires a low angled drive towards the bottom corner, which the USWNT keeper does well to get away from trouble.

Berger and Hegering dicing with death (possibly a slight exaggeration) as they attempt to play out from the back. They just about get away with it as Rodman tries, but fails, to catch them out.

For the first time in the game, a bit of a lull in play, with the USWNT dominating possession.

Lavelle swings a corner right on top of Berger, who flaps her wrists at it but gets just enough on it to get it away. That could've been danger!
The kiss of death indeed...Horan hits it straight into the wall.

Crucial challenge from Girma!
Not for the first time in this tournament, Naomi Girma makes a brilliant last-ditch challenge to stop an effort on goal. This time, Anyomi is player thwarted as she broke away into the box.
Gwinn ventures down the right for Germany and clips a dangerous cross into the box, which Davidson does well to get away before it becomes a problem.
Remember, the winner will face either Spain or Brazil in the final...sorry, gold medal match in Paris on Saturday.

Another effort on goal for the USWNT! A slightly more hopeful one this time from Smith, whose shot from the edge of the box is easily gathered by Berger.
Germany have sprung a bit of a surprise so far as Brand, who normally plays wide, and Lohman, who normally players centrally, have switched roles in the opening stages. Something to keep an eye on.
Although the USA have created those two big chances, there has also been some sloppy passing in midfield. That will encourage Germany.

The US could be 2-0 up already! Rodman breaks away down the right and has lots of support inside. Swanson leaves it for Lavelle, who shoots straight at Berger!

That could've been the opener for the USWNT! Davidson is all alone at the back post as a free-kick comes into the box, but she heads straight at Berger!
As I mentioned, the USWNT are wearing their white home kit, but with red shorts, which is a change for the norm. That'll be because the normal dark blue clashes with the German shorts.

Why is USWNT - Germany being played in Lyon and not Paris?
The 2024 Olympics are being held in Paris, right? So why's this game being played in Lyon in the east of France?
Well, it's pretty customary for a number of events to be spread around the host country, and it makes particular sense with soccer. There aren't enough big stadiums in Paris to go around, so matches have also taken place in Marseille, Nice, Bordeaux, Saint-Étienne, Nantes.

Well, let's just call it a one-sided affair. Sophia Smith opened the scoring in the 11th minute for the Americans, who were briefly pegged back when Giulia Gwinn levelled for Germany.
However, parity lasted no more than four minutes as Mal Swanson put the USA back in front. And they never looked back from there, with Smith and Lynn Williams adding further goals just before the whistle in either half.

How did Germany get to the 2024 Olympic Games semifinal?
As we've established, Germany were in the United States' group and were soundly beaten by the USWNT. They did, though, comfortably win their other two matches against Australia and Zambia to go through to the quarterfinals as runners-up.
Their first knockout game was even more dramatic than the USA's, however, as they defeated Canada in a penalty shootout after a goalless draw.

How did the USWNT get to the 2024 Olympic Games semifinals?
Group B was pretty plain sailing for the United States. They won all three games, including 4-1 against Germany in their second match, to qualify for the quarterfinals as group winners, also ahead of Zambia and Australia.
Their last-eight clash against Japan, however, was rather tougher going, with extra-time needed to secure a 1-0 win thanks to Rodman's goal.

There’s been little rest for the wicked throughout the Olympic soccer tournaments for both men and women. Although the winning semifinalists here will be treated to three full days off before the gold medal match, which takes place on Saturday, 10 August.

2024 Olympic women’s soccer semifinals lineup
Both women's soccer semifinals are taking place today (Tuesday, August 6) and we will, of course, have live coverage of the two matches right here on AS USA.
- United States - Germany, 12pm ET
- Brazil - Spain, 3pm ET
My esteemed colleague Pablio Caycedo will be all over the second semifinal once the first is over and done with.
Those look like two pretty tasty match-ups if you ask me!
What time does USWNT against Germany kick off?
The game in Lyon (you'll be well aware by now not everything is happening in Paris) gets underway at 6:00 p.m. local time, which is 12:00 p.m. ET and 9:00 a.m. PT. Can we get an early lunch break/late start depending on where we are?
