Hopes are pinned on the USWNT to clinch the gold medal at this summer’s Olympics. Emma Hayes’ team start out as favorites, with odds of +170 ahead of world champions Spain (+200) and tournament hosts France (+500), although that doesn’t always count for much, as we saw in the last Women’s World Cup when the United States were dumped out in the Round of 16.

Emma Hayes has taken a 22-player squad to France, the majority of whom are currently playing in Women’s Professional Soccer plus three who are at European clubs: Emily Fox (Arsenal), Korbin Albert (PSG) and Lindsey Horan (Olympique Lyonnais). Two players have been called up for the first time - Orlando Pride defender Emily Sams and Washington Spirit midfielder Hal Hershfelt.

Hayes has overseen just four games since taking the reins from interim coach Twila Kilgore in May. She watched her side comfortably beat South Korea twice in two friendlies at the start of June with this month’s warm-up match raising more questions - a slim win over Mexico and a goalless draw against Costa Rica.

A tough group stage awaits the USWNT

The USWNT begin their Paris 2024 Olympic campaign against 64th-ranked Zambia at Stade de Nice on Thursday 25 July, with the game kicking off at 21:00 hours local time CEST (3 p.m. ET / 12 noon PT).

After that, things will get a little tougher for the United States. Germany, who recently moved up to fourth in the world ranking, are the next opponents. The second match in Group B will take place at Stade de Marseille on Sunday 28 July, kicking off at 21:00 hours local time CEST (3 p.m. ET / 12 noon PT).

The group stage is brought to a close on Wednesday 31 July against Australia - the match will be played at Stade de Marseille, kicking off at the earlier time of 21:00 hours CEST (1 p.m. ET / 10 a.m. PT).
