Carlos Alcaraz continues to dream of an Olympic medal. The 21-year-old Spanish tennis star defeated Tallon Griekspoor (Netherlands) in the second round 6-1, 7-6.

After Alcaraz dominated the first set, Griekspoor improved in the second, forcing the match to be decided in the tie-break. However, there was no room for a Dutch comeback, as the Spaniard advanced to the next round and is two wins away from reaching the medal games.

Who is Carlos Alcaraz’s next rival in the Olympic Games?

Alcaraz will face the 26-year-old Russian athlete Roman Safiullin, 66th in the ATP ranking, in the third round of the tournament. Although the balance seems to be tilted in favor of the Spaniard, there are a no easy games at the Olympics.

The Russian knocked out Alejandro Tabilo in the first round and Tomás Martín Etcheverry in the second. The records date show one time when the two faced each other: it was at the 2023 Paris Masters, which ended with Safiullin’s victory, winning 6-3 and 6-4 against the Spaniard.

Alcaraz-Safiullin’s game at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games will be played this Wednesday, July 31, with the start time yet to be confirmed.
