Lyle, who had taken bronze at the Tokyo Summer Games in 2021, pipped Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson to gold in a time of 9.784, in an astonishingly tight race at Paris’ Stade de France. The last-placed finisher, Jamaican Oblique Seville, crossed the line just 0.12 seconds after Lyles, as all eight athletes ran under 10 seconds in a wind-legal 100m race for the first time in history.

In the immediate aftermath of the final, Lyles was convinced that Thompson had just beaten him to the gold. “I went up to Kishane and I was like, ‘I’m gonna be honest, I think you had that one,’” the American told Eurosport, per Olympics.com. “I was fully prepared to see his name pop up [as the winner on the scoreboard]. And to see my name pop, I’m like, ‘goodness gracious, I’m incredible’.”

Alongside the headlines generated by his successes on the track - Lyles is also the reigning 100m and 200m world champion - the 27-year-old’s personal life accrues plenty of column inches in the press. He forms something of an athletics power couple with the Jamaican runner Junelle Bromfield, who is also competing at the 2024 Summer Games.

Born on February 8, 1998, in Black River, Jamaica, Bromfield specialises in the 400m. Like Lyles, she is an Olympic medallist: she won bronze in the women’s 4x400m relay at the Tokyo Games in 2021. She is now out to improve on that feat in the French capital, where she will feature for the Jamaicans in the women’s 400m and 4x400m relay, having already been part of the team that came fifth in the mixed 4x400m relay.

Lyles and Bromfield first connected on social media in 2017. According to a joint interview the couple conducted with the podcast Fast Lane Lifestyle, they quickly developed an online friendship after she sent him a message on Instagram. “A year after they started chatting, they decided to meet in person - but the rendezvous didn’t go well. “It didn’t click at all,” Bromfield recalled. “It was like, ‘No, let’s just be friends.’”
