Why does Team USA have three players in women’s golf at the 2024 Olympics in Paris?

Tokyo 2020 Olympic Champion Nelly Korda, Rose Zhang, and World No. 2 Lilia Vu will form the Team USA roster for the Paris Olympic Games golf tournament.

The United States women’s golf team features two-time Olympian and Tokyo 2020 gold medalist Nelly Korda, who will have the opportunity to be the first Olympian golfer to defend her title. Joining her on Team USA are World No. 2 Lilia Vu and No. 9 Rose Zhang.

The competition is balanced, with no country sending more than three representatives to Paris. The Republic of Korea is the only other nation sending three representatives to the Games, and all three golfers are in the top 13 of the world rankings.

Olympic Golf Rankings and number of participants

The Olympic golf rankings determine the number of players each country can have on their rosters. The rankings are based on the Rolex Rankings, with the top 15 players in the world eligible for Paris. Each nation can have a maximum of four golfers. Countries outside the top 15 can have up to two eligible players if they do not already have two or more players in the top 15.

There have only been three women’s individual golf tournaments at the Olympic Games, and the United States has won two of them. The Olympic women’s golf event will take place at Le Golf National outside Paris. There will be 60 players, and they will have two practice days following the conclusion of the men’s event.

The format for golf is a 72-hole individual stroke play event. Unlike most tournaments, there is no halfway cut, so all 60 women should play all four rounds.
