2022 Memorial Tournament preview: How to watch, who to watch, the course and prize money
The PGA tour heads north to Ohio to play one of the most well-known, non-major tournaments on the circuit.
The Memorial Tournament will host 120 of the best players on the PGA tour this weekend at Jack Nicklaus’ signature course, Muirfield Village Golf Club, outside of Columbus, Ohio.
How to watch
The tournament can be watched live on the Golf Channel from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. EDT on Thursday and Friday. The Golf Channel will start the coverage from 12:30-2:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday with CBS finishing the day from 2:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The tournament can be streamed online on ESPN+ from 8:15 a.m.to 7 p.m. EDT from Thursday through Sunday.
Who to watch
The tournament is one of the most popular amongst the PGA pros and a very impressive field of players will be competing this weekend with the exception of Dustin Johnson and Tiger Woods. Although DJ won’t be in Ohio, everyone will be talking about him and his decision to join the Saudi-backed LIV series. While Tiger is resting up for the US Open in two-weeks time after an early exit at the PGA Championship. A strong field of 120 players will compete to bring home the trophy on Sunday.
Jon Rahm
The Spaniard will try to pick up where he left off after having to withdraw after testing positive for COVID last year with a 6-shot lead after 54 holes. The course seems to suit his game as he cruised to victory in 2020 with a 3-shot lead over the rest of the field, despite a 2-shot penalty on the last hole.
Rory McIlroy
The Northern Irishman is hot as of late, with three straight top-10 finishes including the PGA Championship and the Masters, where he was runner-up. He is still struggling to put together four solid rounds and is hoping to do this week in Ohio. He’ll have to rely on his strong putting and iron play if he wants to have a chance to win on Sunday.
Jordan Spieth
He has played well here with a T-7 finish in 2019 and in the top-20 the last two years. His game suits this course and he is hoping his putter gets hot this weekend to make some low scores and be in a position to win on Sunday.
Some other big names at the Memorial Tournament this weekend are Cameron Smith, Colin Morikawa, Xander Schauffele and Shane Lowry. Defending champ Patrick Cantlay won his second Memorial Tournament last year and is looking for this third in 2022.
The course
The tournament at Jack Nicklaus’ signature course in Dublin, Ohio was first played in 1976. It is a popular stop on the PGA Tour and course architect and founder Jack Nicklaus will host the event in his home state. As the tradition goes, he will greet the winner as he walks off the 18th green on Sunday.
Muirfield Village Golf Club is a beautiful par 72 layout in central Ohio with 18 demanding holes totaling over 7,500 yards. Water comes into play in 11 of the 18 holes in the shape of creeks and ponds so ball placement is key. Number 12 is a fan favorite as players are challenged to hit the par-3 green with water and sand making things difficult for them.
The finishing hole is a par-4 dogleg right, where most players will choose a 3-wood in order to find the fairway and fire a short iron into the green. They will try to avoid the creek on the left and bunkers at the corner of the dogleg on the right. The toughest part of the hole is the green itself and nothing will be certain on Sunday until the last ball finds the hole.
Prize money
The prize money totals $12 million with the winner taking home $2.16 million as well as 550 FedEx Cup points.
