Expectations were low for underdog Serena Williams as she headed into her second game at the US Open against world number two Anett Kontaveit. But she delivered an upset as only she could, defeating the Estonian, 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-2.

The crowd cheered every point she made, everyone wanting the tennis legend to win. The GOAT took the first set after a tiebreak, after which Kontaveit came back to dominate the second set. But, with the support of the 20,000-strong audience, Williams showed her legendary form in the third.

The tournament at Flushing Meadows is widely expected to be her last after she pronounced on Vogue magazine that she would evolve away from tennis after the US Open, the first major event that she ever won.

Williams won her tournament opener on Monday against Danka Kovinic of Montenegro, 6-3, 6-3, in a match that exhibited her best form since she came back from her injury last year.

After her victories in rounds one and two, she is now favored by oddsmakers to win the third round, when she faces world number 45 Ajla Tomljanovic of Australia, against whom she has never played before.

The 40-year-old said she has been enjoying her run at the last Grand Slam event of the year, and that she has not played with such freedom since 1998.

“I don’t have anything to prove. I don’t have anything to win. I have absolutely nothing to lose,” she said.
