2022 US Open: Which American players are through to the second round?
Playing on home turf is one thing, but you’ve still got to win and that’s what these Americans did to advance. Let’s see who they are.
We take a look at the American players who’ve qualified for the second round of the 2022 US Open at Flushing Meadows in New York.
Americans in the Mix at 2022 US Open
The 2022 US Open could well be one of the most important tennis tournaments in recent history with Serena Williams set to call time on her illustrious 26-year career. Indeed, as one of the greatest to ever play the sport and with 23 major titles to her name, there really is no other like her. Yet, who are the other Americans in play and moreover which of them is into the second round? Let’s take a look at who’s in and who they will have to face in the US Open’s second round:
Mens Singles
Sebastian Korda (USA) vs Tommy Paul (USA)
After defeating Facundo Bagnis 5-7, 7-6, 7-5, 6-1, the American moves on to the second round where he will actually face one of his own countrymen in the form of Tommy Paul. Where Paul is concerned, he made it to the round courtesy of a 4-6, 6-3, 2-6, 6-0, 7-5 victory against Bernabe Zapata Miralles.
J.J. Wolf (USA) vs Alejandro Tabilo (CHL)
Following his straight set victory over Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut, the American definitely turned heads in what has to be considered an upset. With that, he will now face Alejandro Tabilo of Chile in the second round of the US Open. Tabilo booked his spot after coming out on top against Kamil Majchrzak of Poland 6-1, 6-4, 6-7, 6-1.
Emilio Nava (USA) vs Andy Murray (GBR)
The American will have his hands full when he squares off against the one-time World No. 1 of Great Britain. What’s more, is that he will have to recover as best as he can following a grueling match against John Millman of Australia which went to the wire at 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 1-6, 6-1.
Brandon Holt (USA) vs Pedro Cachin (ARG)
Holt is coming off a victory against fellow American Taylor Fritz which he won 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4 and will be hoping to go even further in the US Open when he takes on the Argentine on Tuesday.
Womens Singles
Elizabeth Mandik (USA) vs Ons Jabeur (TUN)
To book her place in the second round of the US Open, Mandik had to get the better of a tough opponent in Tamara Zidanesk of Slovenia. In the end the American came out on top with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 win. She will now face an even stronger challenge when she takes on the Tunisian.
Alison Riske-Amritraj (USA) vs Camila Osorio (COL)
It was an all-American affair when Riske-Amritraj got the better of Eleana Yu to qualify for the second round. Awaiting her, is the dangerous Osorio of Colombia who will no doubt be looking to advance at the American’s expense.
Serena Williams (USA) vs Anett Kontaveit (EST)
The one we all want to see. In what is widely expected to be her final tournament, Williams is now into the second round where she will face the current World No. 2. Indeed, Kontaveit will prove to be a stern test for the former World No. 1 who it must be said is not the player she once was. With that said, this is still Serena Williams and this is still the US Open which she’s more than made her mark on during her career.
Madison Keys (USA) vs Camila Giorgi (ITA)
Keys comes into the second round following a straight set win over Ukranian Dayana Yastremska 7-6, 6-3. The American will of course be hoping to advance, but will find it tough going against the World No. 29 from Italy.
Coco Gauff (USA) vs Elena-Gabriela Ruse (ROU)
The break-out teenage sensation returns to Flushing Meadows where she actually reached the first major final of her career just last year in the US Open’s doubles format. Having secured a spot in the second round via a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Leolia Jeanjean, the young American will be looking to show she can play with the best of them.
Shelby Rogers (USA) vs Viktoria Kuzmova (SVK)
It took three sets, but Rogers was finally managed to dismiss Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands in a 3-5, 6-3, 6-4 victory. With that, the American will now face the Slovakian who in theory she should beat. On the other hand, this is the US Open and anything can happen.
