Home hopes at the US Open now lie with American number one Jessica Pegula and Frances Tiafoe, who beat Rafael Nadal in round four.
The remaining semifinal slots at the US Open will be decided on Wednesday with this year’s tournament already into uncharted territory after the fourth-round elimination of Rafael Nadal by American world number 26 Frances Tiafoe: for the first time since 2003, none of Nadal, Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic are in the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam. That also means, following Nick Kyrgios’ win over world number one and defending champion Daniil Medvedev, there will be a first-time major winner in both the men’s and women’s draws at Flushing Meadows.
Tiafoe will continue his attempt to become the first American player to win the US Open men’s singles title since Andy Roddick in 2003 when he takes on Andrey Rublev on Arthur Ashe. That game will be preceded by a fascinating match-up between Karolina Pliskova, a finalist in New York in 2016, and Aryna Sabalenka, a US Open semifinalist last year. The two players have met four times before, each winning twice and Pliskova beating the Belarusian at Wimbledon in 2021 to advance to the final.
Swiatek looking to add hard court major to clay titles
In the evening session on Arthur Ashe world number one Iga Swiatek will seek to end home interest in the women’s draw when she takes on American number one Jessica Pegula. Swiatek dominated the clay court season and has two Roland Garros titles to her name at the age of 21 but has yet to make the breakthrough at a hard court major. The Pole reached the semis at the Australian Open in January but was beaten by Danielle Collins and she has never previously been beyond the fourth round in New York. Pegula, who has a fascinating back story, has been making good on the early promise she displayed of late with quarterfinal runs at the Australian and French Opens this year and appearances in the quarters in Cincinnati and semis in Toronto leading up to the US Open.
Following that game, Carlos Alcaraz will look to further embellish his status as the heir to Nadal’s throne when he takes on Jannik Sinner for a place in the semis. With the 22-times Grand Slam winner out and Federer and Djokovic absent, there has never been a better opportunity for someone to stake their claim to a place at the top table and the Spaniard is the highest seed remaining in the draw. Kyrgios was the odds-on favourite after dethroning Medvedev but couldn’t back up that win against Karen Khachanov and the finalist from the bottom half of the draw will play either the Russian or Casper Ruud for the title. Sinner has been taken to five sets twice already and has yet to face a seeded player at this year’s tournament and Alcaraz will go into the match as favourite, with the prize at stake a semifinal against either Tiafoe or Rublev.
