2022 US Open: Who plays today September 8? Match times for the women’s semifinals

Four players will be vying to reach a maiden US Open final on Thursday when the women’s semifinals are staged on Arthur Ashe. Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, Caroline Garcia and Aryna Sabalenka are no strangers to the big stage - all have been in a singles or doubles final at a Grand Slam before and only Jabeur hasn’t won a major in one event or the other – but none have ever made the final at Flushing Meadows. Sabalenka, the world number 6, was a semifinalist last year and has a career-high ranking of number one but goes into her match with the player currently occupying top spot as the underdog, despite a solid win over 2016 runner-up Karolina Pliskova in the previous round. Swiatek’s star has waned a little since her incredible run during the clay season that culminated in a second Roland Garros title, but other than a little first-set wobble against Jule Niemeier in the fourth round her progress in New York has been largely untroubled.

Swiatek may be the star draw but Garcia is the player to watch. The 28-year-old has never been beyond the quarters at a Grand Slam in singles but came into the tournament on the back of a title run in Cincinnati and has two French Open doubles titles to her name. The Frenchwoman and her partner, Kristina Mladenovic, were knocked out in the quarters and that may work to Garcia’s advantage against Wimbledon finalist Jabeur, one fewer distraction as she aims to reach a slam singles final for the first time. Garcia’s run to the semis has been impressive: she has yet to drop a set and has seen off 2019 champions Bianca Andreescu, 29th seed Alison Riske-Amritraj and Coco Gauff. An outsider before the US Open began, Garcia has the power and stamina to match Jabeur shot for shot and it won’t be a huge surprise if she eases past the Tunisian world number five in the opening game on Arthur Ashe.
