Having answered the large majority of the questions asked of him by the quick and firm terrain and the breeze to boot, surprise leader Brian Harman has set out his stall after two rounds. Now that the competition has been thinned, focus will truly be key.

2023 British Open: Lay of the Land

Aside from the surprising list of tour winners and champions who booked their tickets home on Friday, the other unexpected turn was Brian Harman. The 36-year-old with just two PGA Tour wins to his name, is now heading into Round 3 on Saturday with an impressive five-stroke lead over the rest of the field. At 10 under par, he now has the real opportunity to increase that distance. Sitting just behind him is Tommy Fleetwood at 5 under. A clear crowd favorite, Fleetwood has been playing some great golf, but he’ll have to hope Harman slips if he’s to have any chance of taking the top spot.

As for the man himself, Harman’s second round was void of bogeys and which makes sense considering that he bogeyed just once across his first 36 holes. At any rate, the weather is expected to take a turn for the worse on Saturday, so rhetoric aside, those who remain will be facing additional challenges on an already unforgiving course. Can Harman maintain, or will he open the door to one of the chasing pack? Watch this space.
