2023 Ryder Cup standings: Day 1 scores for Team USA vs. Team Europe at Marco Simone
It was all Team Europe on day one as the battle got underway for the Ryder Cup in Italy. Here’s the the two teams’ standings after the foursomes and four-balls.
In a historic first, the Ryder Cup bids “Ciao” as it ventures to Italy this year. The 2023 Ryder Cup is unfolding at the Marco Simone Golf and Country Club, pitting Team USA against Team Europe in their biennial golfing clash.
Day 1 summary
It was very much Europe’s day as they finished 6 1/2 - 1 1/2 after the foursomes and four-balls. The day could not have started worse for the Americans, as they slumped to a 4-0 defeat in the foursomes; not only did they fail to get on the scoreboard, but at no point were they leading in any of the matches.
The Americans were hopeful they could turn things around in the afternoon, and although Europe’s McIlroy/Fitzpatrick quickly ran away with the final match, eventually winning 5&3, the Americans were hopeful of getting three points from the other matches, leading all of them at some point.
But Hovland sank an outrageous putt to tie the first match against Thomas and Spieth before Rahm produced a 30 foot putt for an eagle to tie the third match. Homa and Clark looked like they were going to hold on to their slender lead to take the third match against MacIntyre and Rose, and finally bag a first full point for the US but Homa’s putt on the 18th slid just past the hole and Rose sank his to tie the match and ensure Europe finished the day leading by 6 and a half to one and a half.
The Americans, trailing by a full five points, will be forcing themselves to think, and believe, there are still 20 points on offer, but they know they have the biggest of Ryder Cup mountains to scale.
2023 Ryder Cup Standings:
|United States||1 1/2|
In the Ryder Cup, teams earn a single point for each match they win and a half point in the case of a tie. With 28 possible points at stake, the first team to reach at least 14 1/2 points secures victory. If the teams are tied 14-all at the end of the tournament the current holders, in this case the Americans, retain the trophy.
Ryder Cup Results:
One of the Ryder Cup’s three events is foursomes, where teams of two share a single ball and alternate their play on each hole, with each player taking shots on either odd- or even-numbered holes. The team with the lowest score on a hole wins, except in the case of a tie when the hole is halved.
The foursomes are played on Friday and Saturday mornings.
Friday, Sept. 29
|Scheffler/Burns||Rahm/Hatton||4 and 3|
|Homa/Harman||Hovland/Aberg||4 and 3|
|Fowler/Morikawa||Lowry/Straka||2 and 1|
|Schauffele/Cantlay||McIlroy/Fleetwood||2 and 1|
Continuing with two-man teams, another Ryder Cup event is fourball, where both members of a team play on the same hole. Each player plays their own ball throughout the hole, but the team counts only the lower of the two scores for that hole. Once again, teams secure the hole with the lowest score while tied holes are halved.
The four-balls are played on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
|Morikawa/Schauffele||McIlroy/Fitzpatrick||5 and 3|
The third and final event in the Ryder Cup is singles, the most straightforward format. One player from each team competes head-to-head, with the player achieving the lowest score on each hole, claiming the hole. Ties result in the hole being halved.
The singles are played on Sunday.
