Ireland’s Shane Lowry heads into round three in pole position to secure the second British Open title of his career, having finished day two sitting two shots clear at the top of the leaderboard.

Winner of the Open in 2019, Lowry followed up his opening score of 66 by carding 69 in Friday’s second round at Royal Troon Golf Club, where world No. 2 Rory McIlroy was one of several big names who failed to make the cut amid testing weather conditions.

Lowry completed round two on seven under par, ahead of English pair Justin Rose and surprise package Dan Brown, who are both on five under. Brown, ranked 272 in the world, is taking part in the first major of his career.

The world No. 1, the US’s Scottie Scheffler, is on two under and is tied for fourth place with countryman Billy Horschel and South Africa’s Dean Burmester.

Who missed the cut at the 2024 British Open?

McIlroy, who was Open champion in 2014, conceded that the windy conditions in Troon “got the better of me” after he missed the six-over cut line on Friday.

The Northern Irishman, who finished day two on 11 over, said: “I didn’t adapt well at all to that left-to-right wind yesterday on the back nine, and then this afternoon going out in that gusty wind on the front, as I said, it got the better of me, and I felt pretty uncomfortable over a few shots.”

Other big names who won’t be involved this weekend include US Open champion Bryson DeChambeau (+9), world No. 4 Ludvig Aberg (+9), world No. 5 Wyndham Clark (+16), world No. 7 Viktor Hovland (+10), world No. 12 Tommy Fleetwood (+9) and three-time Open winner Tiger Woods (+14).
