World no.1 Scottie Scheffler is in position to strike at the 2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee after following up his opening 66 with a 65, leaving him just two shots off the lead jointly held by Denny McCarthy and Hideki Matsuyama after round two.

2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship round 2 recap

McCarthy, ranked 40th in the world, was one of three players to card a seven-under par 63 on Friday and the only one to register nine birdies. Matsuyama is alongside the Marylander on 11-under par for the tournament after a second-round 64.

The pair lead by one from Sam Burns, who also went round in 63, with Scheffler a shot further back following his bogey-free 65, which included three birdies in a row on 15, 16 and 17.

Justin Rose and recent PGA Tour winner Nick Dunlap are three strokes off the pace on -8, with Viktor Hovland, the third player to shoot 63 in round two, Robert MacIntyre and Billy Horschel trailing by four going into the weekend.

First-round leader Chris Kirk tumbled down the leaderboard as a result of a level-par 70, which leaves him five back, while Rory McIlroy had a Friday to forget. His three-over par 73 means he is +1 for the tournament and down in joint 58th place in a field of 70.

Due to the threat of thunderstorms and a 40% chance of rain in Memphis on Saturday morning, the PGA Tour has decided to push third-round tee times back a little. Additionally, there will be a two-tee start (1 and 10) and players will play in three-balls to help ensure the schedule isn’t affected for the second week running.

2024 FedEx St. Jude Championship prize money

The fact that this is the first tournament in the FedEx Cup playoffs means the prize purse is significant, with a total of $20m. As for the winner, they will walk away with a healthy sum of $3,600,000. Since there are only 70 players in the field, everyone involved will pocket a portion of the huge purse, with the player in last place netting a tidy $40,000.
