The 2024 RSM Classic got underway on Thursday as the PGA Tour arrived at the palatial surroundings of Sea Island Golf Club.

The century-old golf resort is based on the privately owned Sea Island area on the Golden Isles of Georgia. The site has long been a seaside resort for the wealthy and there is an exclusive gated community of around 500 residences.

It’s one of the most lavish of all the stops on the US leg of the PGA Tour and entry to the club is difficult to secure. The golf club’s Full and Beach & Sports Memberships are typically only offered to residents with “qualified real estate” in the local area, ensuring that only a select group are able to join.

How much is membership at the Sea Island Golf Club?

The golf scene on Sea Island is now a significant part of the local economy and there are regular golfing events bringing elite players to the area. As such, membership to the club does not come cheap.

Lifestyle blog Sharing Horizon made a trip to the exclusive resort and found that members pay annual dues of $12,000, but that’s not the only expense. Anyone without the requisite real estate is also required to stump up $150,000 for the initiation fee before joining.

Even those with the money are not guaranteed a place. The Sea Island website states that a "prospective member must be recommended for membership by a Sea Island Club member," adding another layer of exclusivity to the club.

As well as its impressive golfing heritage, the Sea Island Golf Club has also played host to some major political figures. In 2004 President George W. Bush used the resort to host a meeting of the G8 leaders, bringing together the likes of President Jacques Chirac of France, Prime Minister Tony Blair of the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi of Italy and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
