The women’s 5000m final promises to be intriguing contest as some of the biggest names on the world stage will be going head-to-head in the grueling event.

Stars are out in women’s 5000m final

Though much of the focus after the women’s 5000m heats, was on the fact that recently returned Caster Semenya of South Africa had failed to qualify for the finals, the reality is there will be no shortage of stars when the final gets off and running on Saturday evening. Indeed, with Ethiopians Gudaf Tsegay, Dawit Seyaum, and Letesenbet Gidey all qualified, alongside Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands we’re definitely going to be in for a show. That is of course, before we even mention the three Kenyans: Margaret Chelimo Kipkemboi, Gloria Kite and Beatrice Chebet.

Speaking after her qualification for the final, Dutch star and reigning 5000m Olympic champion Hassan gave her thoughts. “The race went beautifully,” said Hassan who won gold in the event last year in Tokyo. “It went a bit harder, under 15 minutes. I have not trained much this year. I want to get my body sharp for the final. I wanted to be top five and finishing top three gives me more confidence. I need to be more focused and dig deep in the final.” Hassan knows all to well that she will have to be on her absolute best. With world record holder Letesenbet Gidey(14:06.62) in the lineup and on the hunt for a medal, she may well be the only one who can break up the hegemony enjoyed by Ethiopia and Kenya in the event over the last few years.
