51 Olympians, five boroughs, one final farewell: The 2025 New York City Marathon is ready to make history
New York will say farewell to one of the most celebrated long-distance runners of all time as Eliud Kipchoge prepares for his final competitive marathon.

The 2025 New York City Marathon will be held on Sunday, November 2 and it will bring to a close one of the most incredible careers in long-distance running.
Days before his 41st birthday, Eliud Kipchoge will run a major marathon for the final time. On Friday Kipchoge confirmed that his 13-year professional running career will end in New York this weekend.
“November, and it’s New York … It’s a place that has been on my mind for a long time,” he said in a conversation with Olympics.com. “It’s time for me to go there before embarking on my new journey of running for other things.”

The Kenyan athlete has racked up 16 wins from 23 competitive marathons, 11 of which came at the illustrious marathon majors: Sydney, Tokyo, Chicago, London, Berlin. His appearance in New York this weekend will be the first time that he has competed in the NYC marathon, completing the set of seven majors.
Kipchoge is the only male athlete to have won the London Marathon four times and he is a five-time champion in Berlin. In Germany he twice broke the marathon world record, most recently with a time of 2:01:09 in 2022.
On Sunday the 40-year-old runner will be one of 51 Olympians and Paralympians in the field. Last year’s New York City Marathon was the largest marathon in world history with an astonishing 55,642 finishers. A similar number is expected to take part in this year’s competition, with a further two million spectators expected to take to the streets to cheer on the runners.
