Alcaraz threatens Djokovic’s throne at Queen’s

The Spanish tennis star has a chance to rise to the summit of the rankings, while USA’s Tiafoe debuts in the Top-10.

This week, Carlos Alcaraz has a fresh opportunity to challenge the current world number one, Novak Djokovic, in the ATP rankings. Djokovic has held the top spot for 389 weeks and currently has 7,595 points after his recent victory at Roland Garros. Despite this big win, though, Alcaraz remains a real threat to Djokovic’s position.

How can Alcaraz return to tennis number one?

The tennis player from Murcia currently holds second place with 7,145 points. If, though, Alcaraz was to win the Queen’s tournament, that would hand him an additional 500 points, taking him exactly 50 points above Djokovic and securing the top spot. It’s worth noting that Djokovic will not be participating in the Queen’s tournament nor at Halle this week, so will not be adding to his tally.

Most of the rest of the Top-10 rankings remain unchanged, featuring players like Daniil Medvedev, Casper Ruud, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Holger Rune, Andrey Rublev, Taylor Fritz, and Jannik Sinner. One new addition, however, is American player Frances Tiafoe, who entered the elite group for the first time in her career. Tiafoe secured 250 points as the champion of the Stuttgart tournament, pushing him into tenth with 3,085 points.

ATP Ranking as of 19 June 2023

1. Novak Djokovic (SRB) 7,595
2. Carlos Alcaraz (ESP) 7,175
3. Daniel Medvedev 5,845
4. Casper Ruud (NOR) 4,960

10. Frances Tiafoe (USA) 3,085

Race To Turin: Djokovic stays ahead of Medvedev and Alcaraz

Djokovic, in addition to being the leader of the ATP ranking, also remains the leader of the Race To Turin for another week after scoring 4,745 points so far in 2023.

However, the Serbian may also see that leadership threatened, with Daniil Medvedev, second in the race with 4,310 points, in a position to overtake if he adds 500 as champion of the Halle tournament. Third in that table is Alcaraz with 4,175 points and he’ll close the gap with a strong showing in London.
