Alcaraz wants to dethrone Djokovic at the Australian Open

The Murcia native is ready and full of motivation ahead of the Australian Open, where he wants to make history.

The Australian Open is about to start and the players are ready to compete in the first Grand Slam tournament of the year.

Novak Djokovic is the defending champion and the most dominant player in the history of the tournament, as he is looking to become champion in Melbourne for the 11th time.

However, the NextGen, led by Carlos Alcaraz, seems ready to take on the challenge and put Djokovic in trouble in his favorite major.

Alcaraz hasn’t played any official game this 2024, but he has been preparing to be at his best in Melbourne instead. The 20-year-old star, who already knows what it feels to defeat Nole in a major final, wants to repeat that feat in the Australian Open and win the third Grand Slam event of his career.

Defeating Djokovic at the AO, an “extra motivation”

Alcaraz is known for his competitiveness and winning mentality and admitted that his goal in Melbourne is to play Djokovic in the final and win the Australian Open.

It’s an extra motivation for me. I’m an ambitious guy. I always want to play against the best players in the world to see what my level is”, he said about the possibility of facing the world No. 1 in the last round.

“Obviously, it’s a good test, playing against him in the tournament where he’s almost unbeaten. I’m looking to reach the final and hopefully play against him. It would be great obviously. But, yeah, knowing those stats, it’s an extra motivation, for sure”, Alcaraz added.

Asked about the fact that he hasn’t played any official tournament in 2024, Alcaraz believes that it won’t affect him once the tournament starts.

“I think I’m a guy who doesn’t need so much competition before a big tournament”.

The last time Alcaraz was seen in a competitive game was back in December 2023, when he lost 6-3 6-2 to Djokovic in the ATP Finals.
