Alcaraz warned of unforced errors by former tennis player
Seven-time major winner and analyst Mats Wilander says Alcaraz needs to make less unforced errors if he wants to stand a chance against Djokovic.
Carlos Alcaraz probably knows more than anyone what he needs to do to win the Wimbledon trophy, but now, he has received a piece of advice from someone who has tasted success quite a few times in Grand Slam tournaments.
Former player and now analyst Mats Wilander believes the Spaniard has all the tools to win many majors, and probably do it next week in Wimbledon, but he stated that the Murcia native will need to be aware of his unforced errors and try to work on them to challenge Djokovic in a potential final.
Against Alexandre Muller, Alcaraz didn’t have his best performance, making 41 unforced errors, although he ended up winning the match in straight sets, 6-4 7-6(2) 6-3.
Alcaraz: fewer risks?
The current US Open champion has been quite aggressive in his game during the start of the competition in London, as he uses to be when playing on clay.
However, according to Wilander, he may need to make some adjustments in his game and probably be more careful when it comes to some shots, taking fewer risks, if he wants to have a real shot at the title:
“I think, unfortunately, the way forward for him is going to be to play a little more within himself and not take too many risks because you can’t make that many unforced errors if you’re going to win Wimbledon and beat Novak Djokovic along the way.”
“But of course, people love it. He loves it. I love it. So hopefully he doesn’t change too much but keeps winning”, he added.
“I think that he has to work on that a little bit. It’s tough when you can’t spin the ball as much as you want to and I think on grass that’s one of the big adjustments that you have to make because it is not as easy I don’t think”, Wilander stated.
Alcaraz will be looking to win his second major and 12th ATP singles title by lifting the title at the All England Club after doing so at the Queen’s tournament two weeks ago.
