It’s a mantra repeated in every edition of the Indianapolis 500. The race isn’t won in the first few laps, but it can be lost. You have to survive everything you encounter along the way, manage traffic, accidents, restarts, pit stops, fuel consumption.

And that’s what Álex Palou did on one of the most impressive race tracks in the world as the driver from Barcelona delivered a race based on nous to overcome the likes of Ericsson, O’Ward, and Malukas, with the lapped Foster and DeFrancesco as special guests. They saw the 28-year-old enter the history books with a new chapter in Indy 500 lore being written as Álex Palou won the Indianapolis 500.

Drama precedes Indy 500

Before the action got underway at the Brickyard, there was drama as the highly fancied Scott McLaughlin crashed out of the Indy 500 during the warm up this afternoon.

The New Zealand driver was moving from side to side to warm up his tyres when he suddenly lost control of his car, and smashed into the track side wall, destroying the front left side of his Team Penke car.

The race had been delayed for over an hour by rain, with some speculating that some water left on the track could have contributed to the accident.

“I have no idea what happened. I’m just so upset for my team. I can’t believe we’re out of the race. I put so much into this race,” said a clearly distraught McLaughlin.

When the race got underway, Palou was always in contention and with 80 laps remaining, the Spaniard held virtual third, but offered an overwhelming feeling of having everything under complete control.

Both Ryan Hunter-Reay and Conor Daly crashed out which left the Spaniard, Malukas, Ericsson and O’Ward in a four-way battle.

With 15 laps remaining, Palou launched an attack on the Swede, going all out after Foster and DeFrancesco. The final laps were heart-stopping, as the Spaniard held off Ericsson’s onslaught and, with tears in his eyes, the driver from Sant Antoni de Vilamajor made history and will never forget the final Sunday of May (2025) at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
