Andy Murray’s last Wimbledon in danger
This will be the Scot’s last competitive summer and everything pointed to a farewell at Wimbledon, but a back issue after Queen’s is a big worry.
Three-time Grand Slam winner Andy Murray is set to undergo a course of treatment on his back, after hurting himself at Queens earlier this week. With Wimbledon set to start on 1 July, and by coincidence this year’s event being Andy’s last appearance at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club, it’s a worrying situation for the Scot.
Murray pulls out of Queens
Murray withdrew from his second round match at Queen’s against Jordan Thompson on Wednesday. He pulled out after five games with a with a problem on the right side of his back which affected mobility in his right leg.
The 37-year-old, a two-time winner at Wimbledon in 2016 and 2017, does not plan to continue playing competitively beyond the summer and assured that it would be “ideal to retire at Wimbledon or at the Olympic Games”. However, he will now undergo treatment on his back this Saturday, nine days before the start of the tournament in London.
The former world number one has suffered with injuries on and off since 2019, when he underwent a hip operation in which surgeons inserted a metal implant. This year, before the back problems appeared on the clay court tour, the Scot broke the ligaments in his ankle in a spectacular fall at the Masters 1,000 in Miami.
We will wait and see whether physios can sort out his back issues in time for Andy to get a send-off at Wimbledon, which is how he would want to bow out.
