Update:

The 2026 Winter Olympics (Milano Cortina) officially begin with the Opening Ceremony on Friday, February 6, 2026.

However, because some tournaments require more time to complete, preliminary competitions in sports like curling, ice hockey, and freestyle skiing actually start as early as Wednesday, February 4.

The men’s ice hockey competition is consistently one of the top three most-watched sports at the Winter Olympics. In many countries, particularly in North America and Northern Europe, it is considered the “premier” event of the Games but for Canadians, it is far and away the most-watched event. For example, during the 2014 Sochi Games, nearly half of the entire Canadian population tuned in to watch the gold medal game.

Canada at the 2026 Games

Canada are the leading favorites to win the gold medal in men’s ice hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

This will be the first (and likely only) time we see Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid play together for Team Canada in the Olympics.

Canada won the “4 Nations Face-Off” in early 2025 (an NHL-led preview of best-on-best talent), beating the USA in a dramatic overtime final.
