Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez retained his super middleweight title at the weekend after defeating Jaime Munguía by unanimous decision, and there is already a promoter eager to organize the Jalisco native’s next fight.

Turki Alalshikh, appointed as the chairman of the General Entertainment Authority by royal decree of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, is planning to organize a card headlined by Canelo and the boxer he considers the best pound-for-pound.

In an interview with ESPN, Alalshikh stated that he aims to set up a fight between Mexican Canelo Álvarez and American Terence Crawford in the United States by December of this year or January 2025.

“I’m working to secure (Canelo), but it will be a big fight for Crawford,” said Alalshikh. “I’ll talk to him about the names.”

After defeating Munguía, Álvarez stated that for the right amount of money, he would fight any opponent. While there has been significant speculation about Canelo facing David Benavidez, the undisputed champion has made it clear that since he holds the belts, he can do as he pleases.

What weight do Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford fight at?

Terence Crawford is currently the top boxer at welterweight (up to 147 pounds) after defeating Errol Spence Jr. in July 2023 by technical knockout. He is set to move up a class to light middleweight (up to 154 pounds) for his next fight against Israil Madrimov on August 3 at BMO Stadium.

However, Canelo is currently fighting at super middleweight (up to 168 pounds) meaning Crawford would need to move up three weight classes to fight the Mexican for the undisputed super middleweight championship.
