Canelo Álvarez will face Jermell Charlo in Las Vegas later this year, bringing together two fighters who are the undisputed world champions in their respective weight division.

For months the world of boxing had expected Álvarez (59-2-2) to fight Jermell’s brother, Jermall. But that all changed when Álvarez signed with the Premier Boxing Championship.

Instead Álvarez, the unified 168-pound champion, will face Jermell Charlo (35-1-1). The Mexican boxer announced the title-defence fight with a post on social media.

Canelo vs Jermell: Unified world champions face off

According to the fight poster, the venue for the fight has not yet been decided. We do know, however, that the fight will be broadcast on Showtime Boxing.

This is the first time in the ‘Big Four’ era of professional boxing that two unified champions have squared off. Álvarez has is the undisputed champions at super-middleweight; Charlo holds all four of the super-welterweight belts.

The 30 September fight will be fought at the super-middleweight division, meaning that Álvarez should have a considerable advantage. Jermell will jump up two weight divisions to fight a boxer many consider to be amongst the finest of his generation.

The last time Jermell entered the ring was in May 2022 when he knocked out Brian Carlos Castaño in the tenth round. He has not been able to fight since due a hand injury. This prevented Jermell from making the mandatory fight against Australian Tim Tszyu.
