Canelo: “I’m in a position where I can do whatever I want”

The Mexican revealed that he will work with his team to decide the step to take next after the IBF has named Cuban William Scull as the mandatory challenger.

The Mexican revealed that he will work with his team to decide the step to take next after the IBF has named Cuban William Scull as the mandatory challenger.

Canelo Álvarez (61-2-2, 39 KOs) is the undisputed super middleweight champion and one of the best boxers in the world, which is why he has so many fighters interested in facing him. The Guadalajara native already has three mandatory rivals he has to face, but it seems they are not part of his plans.

“As I have said, I am in a position where I can do whatever I want”, the Mexican said at the No Golf No Life golf tournament at the Bosque Real club, one of the most exclusive ones in the country.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) ordered Canelo to defend his belt against David Benavídez (28-0-0, 24 KO), the interim super middleweight champion. However, he’s not in Canelo’s plans, like Edgar Berlanga (22-0-0, 17 KOs), the No. 1 on the World Boxing Association’s list (WBA). A few days ago, the International Boxing Federation (IBF) ordered the fight with his mandatory challenger, the Cuban William Scull (22-0-0, 9 KOs).

Canelo will decide who to fight next

“I haven’t seen that, I don’t have social media on my phone, because I took a small break from my phone. Eddy told me something, but I’ve been busy with my VMC drink and now the tournament”, he explained.

“We haven’t gone deep into that, I am going to talk about it with my team and we will see what happens next,” Alvarez answered when asked at the the golf tournament’s press conference.

Canelo previously mentioned that he had earned the right to decide his opponents because he is “the king”, something Floyd Mayweather Jr. agreed with.

The Mexican recently won by a convincing unanimous decision against Jaime Munguia (43-1-0, 34 KOs), taking his undefeated status, a few weeks ago in Las Vegas. The minister of Saudi Arabia, Turki Al-Sheikh, is doing everything to sign him for a fight with Terence Crawford (40-0-0, 31 KOs), a clash all fans want to see.
