Charlo injured: the Tszyu fight postponed

Undisputed 154-lb champion Jermell Charlo broke his hand while training, so the Tszyu fight has been canceled. What happens now?

Undisputed 154-lb champion Jermell Charlo broke his hand while training, so the Tszyu fight has been canceled. What happens now?

2023 is getting closer and with it, some exciting fights. However, in boxing, as in world sports, unexpected events happen.

The Jermell Charlo-Tim Tszyu fight scheduled at the end of January belt has been canceled after Iron Man broke his hand during a training session.

The undisputed junior middleweight champ (35-1-1, 19 KOs), who got injured after landing a shot while sparring, talked to the media to give some details on the situation.

“I was sparring, and I threw this nice punch, and as soon as it landed, I knew something was wrong. I felt my hand throbbing right away”, he said.

“I had two X-rays and an MRI to see what was wrong. It showed it was broken in two places. I hate this feeling. My hand will be in a cast for two months. I’m as disappointed as the fans, maybe more, because this was my first chance to defend the undisputed title”, Jermell explained.

Charlo, confident even with one hand

Charlo, 32, who will now have to wait to have his title defense against mandatory challenger Tszyu probably until April or May, expressed his confidence in his bout vs. The Soul Taker.

“The way I am, I would have beaten Tim Tszyu with one hand, but the doctors and the boxing commission won’t allow that. It’s even more dangerous when a lion faces adversity and has to come back to defend the pride”, he stated.

Meanwhile, the undefeated contender (21-0) expressed his frustration after Charlo’s injury but said he will be patient for the title shot: “I’m very disappointed. I felt like the stars aligned for undisputed, but we move on. I’m ready to take on the next mandatory challenger. I’ll be back for Charlo once he is ready and healed.”

With Jermell out of the ring, Tszyu is interested in staying busy, as he hasn’t fought in nine months since his victory over Terrell Gausha last March.

Tony Harrison, Danny Garcia, Xander Zayas, Sebastian Fundora, and Erickson Lubin are some of the names that came out as possible opponents for the Australian boxer.
