For the third time in the history of the franchise, the Colorado Avalanche are Stanley Cups champions! The Avs topped the Tampa Bay Lightening in Game 6 of the Finals thanks to a brilliant performance from goaltender Darcy Kuemper.

Avs turn off the Lightening

The party is just beginning in Colorado, as the Avs and their fans celebrate their first NHL title since 2001 when Ray Borque and Patrick Roy carried the Avalanche to the Stanley Cup glory.

While it has been a long wait in Colorado it has been an even longer wait for the the leagues winningest team.

It makes sense that a Canadian team has the most titles in the history of the NHL. The sport was invented there almost two centuries ago, and since then hockey has been an institution in Canada.

The Canadiens the kings of the ice

The Montreal Canadians are the most successful team in the NHL, but it’s been a while since the Habs have lifted the Cup. They have a total of 24 Stanley Cups, having won their first in 1916. They would have stead success for the next few decades, but they ran rampant through the league in the 50′s and 60s and into the 70′s. Led by Jean Beliveau, Dickie Moore, Doug Harvey and Bernie Geroffrion they won it all 12 times in the span of 20 years including five straight from 1956-60.

They took a short break from winning over the next two years but then went back-to-back-to-back-to-back form 1975 to 1979. The Habs got one in the 80′s, and then won their last one in 1993.

Henri Richard is was a crucial part of the team in the 50s, 60s and 70s. He won a record 11 Stanley Cups in his 20 year career.

The Toronto Maple Leafs sit in second with 13, and the Detroit Red Wings have 11.
