Davis vs Stevenson next? What did Gervonta’s assistant coach say?
Stevenson defeated Artem Harutyunyan last weekend and is eyeing fights with the biggest names, including ‘Tank’ Davis.
Three weeks ago, Gervonta Davis dismantled Frank Martin, knocking out The Ghost in the eighth round with a big left. After that win, the fighter recognized he would like to fight Vasiliy Lomachenko next, probably at the end of the year, in one of the more interesting fights in 2024.
However, things could take a turn after rising superstar and WBC lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson kept his undefeated record last Saturday night by outpointing Artem Harutyunyan at the Prudential Center, in Newark, New Jersey.
As expected, the 2016 Olympic Games silver medalist got the job done against the dangerous Armenian and although his style is not the most spectacular and entertaining for fans, his boxing IQ is among the best in the sport and a fight against Davis would undoubtedly be a huge event.
What did Davis’ assistant coach say about a fight with Stevenson?
While Lomachenko was the main name to take on Davis next, Stevenson could take that spot from the Ukrainian, as he’s regarded as one of the biggest future stars in boxing.
Tank’s assistant coach, Kenny Ellis, said that Lomachenko, a former two-time gold medalist, will step aside to allow Davis to face Stevenson next.
“Breaking news: Lomachenko said he will step aside and let Gervonta Davis fight Shakur Stevenson this fall, and he’ll fight the winner in early 2025″, Ellis said on Instagram.
Stevenson’s last performances haven’t been convincing, but he’s a world champion and nobody has been able to defeat him so far. Although a fight against the more tested David would be quite risky, it would also grant him a massive purse, and considering he’s undefeated and is one of the boxers of the moment, it could be the perfect time for Shakur to accept such a challenge.
As for Lomachenko, stepping aside and fighting the winner of a potential Davis vs Stevenson mega clash could also be a smart move for the Ukrainian, as he’s already 36 and would fight in a unification showdown against either of them.
